Newcomers are especially vulnerable to scams and frauds. However, the public’s increased access to artificial intelligence (AI) tools in recent years has added a new layer to the scam and fraud threats that newcomers can face.
Following AMSSA’s May 2026 Town Hall on Scams and Frauds Affecting Newcomers, attendees raised the topic of AI and how it plays into the scams and frauds that their clients have been experiencing recently. AMSSA has developed this guide as a response to these needs, offering settlement workers a list of the AI-powered technologies most used by scammers, how they can affect newcomers, and how to spot them. Text generation, video/image deepfakes, and voice cloning are detailed in this guide so that settlement workers can best understand how they may target their clients, and how they can inform their clients of these risks. Steps to support affected newcomers are also provided in this guide.
