Scams and frauds affecting newcomers have been increasing in frequency and complexity. Now more than ever, as immigration policies change and there is more economic uncertainty, newcomers may fall prey to scams and frauds that prey on their immigration status and threaten to create difficulties in their settlement process.
This Town Hall, held live on May 27th, 2026, aimed to provide settlement workers with an improved understanding and awareness of what scams and frauds are generally prevalent, including the ones that can especially target newcomers. The session featured presentations covering topics such as the evolving role of AI in scams and fraud, telltale signs of such schemes, specific immigration-related frauds, strategies for supporting clients impacted by fraud, and preventive measures.
