Following the release of the info sheet Keeping It Cool, Keeping It Safe: Ensuring the Safety and Rights of Migrant Workers During BC’s Summer Months—which focused on protecting migrant workers’ health and safety during hot weather—this info sheet explores the climate-related risks migrant workers may face during British Columbia’s (BC) colder, wetter fall and winter seasons. As the fall and winter seasons bring colder temperatures, rain, snow, and ice to BC, the risk of weather-related injuries on the job increases, especially for workers in outdoor or unheated environments such as construction, landscaping, agriculture, and delivery. Many migrant workers may not be familiar with working in cold or wet conditions, making it important to convey how these environments can affect health and safety at a workplace.
This info sheet is designed for Service Provider Organizations (SPOs) supporting migrant worker clients who are working during BC’s colder months. It offers key information on the risks of cold stress, hypothermia, frostbite, and slipping hazards, while also outlining worker rights and employer responsibilities. It also offers guidance on how to recognize unsafe conditions, refuse unsafe work, and report workplace incidents or injuries to WorkSafeBC. SPOs can use this resource to help clients stay safe, informed, and aware of their rights in the workplace throughout the fall and winter seasons.
