The BC Safe Haven Resource Network is a collaborative of partner agencies working to strengthen the refugee claimant-serving sector in BC. Through tailored resources, trainings, and opportunities to share and connect, this partnership provides capacity-building, mental health, language, and public support gathering for the BC Safe Haven program. The program is led by AMSSA, in partnership with BC Refugee Hub, MAP-BC, VAST, ISSofBC, DIVERSEcity, Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria, and United Way BC.
The Curriculum Guidelines are the result of work done by ISSofBC, DIVERSEcity, and the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria, overseen by AMSSA as part of the BC Safe Haven Resource Network. AMSSA would also like to thank our Curriculum Advisory Group, who provided valuable feedback on the content and format. The Curriculum Guidelines website is tailored for BC Safe Haven formal English language training programs, but can be accessed and used by anyone. It provides an orientation to the needs, experiences, and concerns of refugee claimant language learners; outlines six foundational principles that shape inclusive and relevant language teaching; and offers practical strategies for both stand-alone language programs and integrating refugee claimant students into LINC classes. The Resource Hub page collects resources from across Canada that are relevant to refugee claimant language instruction, as well as original resources and trainings created through the BC Safe Haven Resource Network program.
This is the first resource of its kind in Canada, bringing together research and innovation to create curriculum resources specifically designed for language instruction tailored to the unique needs of refugee claimant language learners.
