In 2023, British Columbia witnessed a notable surge in the number of refugee claimants arriving at its airports, nearly doubling the figures from the previous year. This influx of newcomers has not only underlined the resilience of these individuals but has also posed significant challenges for Vancouver’s shelter system.
Katie Crocker, AMSSA’s Chief Executive Officer, recently spoke to CityNews Vancouver regarding the arrival of refugee claimants and their journey towards establishing new lives in British Columbia.
“They’re here because they need somewhere to live, where they can be safe, where they can be given an opportunity,” emphasized Katie Crocker during her interview.
The increasing number of refugee claimants seeking safety and opportunities in British Columbia reflects the ongoing global refugee crisis. Many individuals and families are forced to flee their home countries due to conflicts, persecution, or dire economic circumstances. In their search for security and stability, they turn to countries like Canada, which have a reputation for welcoming refugees with open arms.
The year 2023, however, brought with it unprecedented challenges for British Columbia, particularly in Vancouver, where the impact of the rising numbers of refugee claimants has been acutely felt. Vancouver’s shelter and support systems have been stretched to their limits, grappling with the sudden surge in demand for housing and services.
