AMSSA E-Symposium: Using Physical and Social Activities as Integration Opportunities

February 7, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Participating in physical and social activities are ways in which newcomers can become integrated into a community. Many of these activities can be low-barriered and inclusionary upon design, when the focus is on connecting people based on commonalities, e.g. common interest in dance, food and music. Connections made within a community and social activities are often centred on sport or social activities. How can a newcomer to Canada use these activities as integration opportunities to Canada if there is no understanding of the value of these activities or if the vocabulary in an official language is not existent?

Attendees of this e-symposium will learn:
1. How physical and social activities could be used as a tool for integration into the community
2. How this can be taught in a LINC classroom
3. How these activities can be used as integration tools during settlement orientation sessions and workshops.
