AMSSA Webinar: Creating and Maintaining Ethical Boundaries in Client Relationships

The Creating and Maintaining Ethical Boundaries in Client Relationships webinar will provide participants with an overview of various professional boundaries that are important when doing ethical, caring work as Settlement Workers and Settlement Language Instructors. This webinar will also highlight the importance of boundaries and provide approaches to create, implement and maintain them in your client relationships.

The following topics will be included in this webinar:

  • Define professional ethics and boundaries
  • Explore various types of professional boundaries
  • Identify the purpose and benefits of setting ethical boundaries in client relationships
  • Learn some of the common boundary issues or challenges that can lead to ethical dilemmas when serving clients (for example, personal disclosure, client-staff relationships, dual relationships, gift-giving/receiving, physical contact, etc.)
  • Reflect on unique boundary challenges when supporting clients in smaller and/or rural communities
  • Understand the role of personal and professional values on creating ethical  boundaries
  • Consider various approaches to creating, implementing and maintaining ethical boundaries

Presenters:

Lynda Monk, MSW, RSW, CPCC
Lynda Monk is a Registered Social Worker, a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach and founder of both Creative Wellness, as well as Thrive Training and Coaching. Lynda has over 25 years of combined experience as a social worker, trainer, speaker and consultant in the areas of care for caregivers, burnout prevention, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, balance and resilience within healthcare, social services, government and non-profit sectors.

Lynda is an experienced facilitator having trained thousands of professionals in various jurisdictions in Canada over the past fifteen years. She has written courses on Personal and Professional Values, and supports professionals with understanding the importance of boundaries to ensure quality, ethical work with clients as well as professional well-being. She is passionate about supporting the learning and growth needs of individuals and organizations who make a difference. She lives with her family on Salt Spring Island, BC.
Katelin Mitchell
Immigrant Services & Operations Manager, Kelowna Community Resources

Katelin Mitchell, BA, CPHR, Immigrant Services & Operations Manager for Kelowna Community Resources, has over 11 years of experience providing extensive settlement and employment services to Immigrants. Her personal experience of having gone through the sponsorship process and having lived and worked abroad adds to her depth of knowledge.

Sasa Loggin
Executive and Project Director, Skeena Diversity Society

Sasa Loggin came to Canada from the Czech Republic in 1991. After her arrival in NW BC, she came to experience the joys and challenges of an immigrant life while raising her family.

She joined Skeena Diversity Society in 2000, volunteered as a board member, worked as its coordinator and got tasked with expending Skeena Diversity in 2009 implementing new programs. The organization has grown since then with its Skeena Diversity Centre downtown location which has become a meeting place for many newcomers living in Terrace and area. Sasa is the current Executive and Project Director for Skeena Diversity Society. Sasa has a degree in system analysis from the Prague School of Economics.
Tahira Saeed
Program Manager, South Okanagan Immigrant & Community Services (SOICS)

Tahira joined the South Okanagan Immigrant & Community Services (SOICS) in 2008 as a settlement Coordinator. Today she leads a team of 17 employees between two office locations.
After completing her Masters in Public Administration, Tahira and her husband immigrated to Canada in 2007 and spent their first year and half in Toronto. She completed her Certification of International Development with UBC and immediately joined Rotary to assist the club in their International projects.

Originally from Pakistan, Tahira began travelling at the age of four when her father was posted in the Embassy of Pakistan – Jakarta (Indonesia), High Commission of Pakistan – Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Embassy of Pakistan – Tokyo (Japan). She is fluent in 5 languages but argues with her husband only in English.
