Staff Movement

Congratulations to Farah Kotadia who assumed the Acting Executive Director role in late September. Katie Rosenberger will return to her role of Executive Director at the end of January 2018, at which point Farah will resume her role as Program Director until March 2019.

We're sad to see you go! 
AMSSA would like to extend its appreciation to Tracy Wideman, former Acting Executive Director who left in late September as well as Lucy Buchanan-Parker, Research and Information Coordinator whose last day at AMSSA will be December 22. 

You'll be missed! We wish you both the best of luck in your new roles.

We would like to welcome Ismael Traore to the role of Research and Information Coordinator at AMSSA. Ismael is an educator and researcher with an expertise in social psychology and social inequality. Most recently, he successfully defended his doctorate thesis at McMaster University. Ismael's first day at AMSSA will be on January 2. Join us in welcoming Ismael to the AMSSA team!

Catch Up on Recent Editions of Migration Matters Info Sheets

AMSSA's Migration Matters info sheet series gives you a two page overview of an important topic in settlement and migration. You can access three new editions of Migration Matters, on the following topics:
  • Intersectionality and Settlement introduced the concept of intersectionality and its relevance to understanding newcomers' experiences, and explored how an intersectional approach can be applied in working with newcomers.
  • Newcomers as Volunteers focused on volunteerism and organizational supports for newcomer volunteers. It explored the scale and shape of newcomer volunteerism, as well as motivations, benefits, and barriers.
  • Census 2016: Immigration and Language in BC brought together the most relevant information from the 2016 Census for settlement and language service provider organizations in BC. It also provided guidance on how to access community-specific information.

Learn more about the pre-arrival services program in Canada and get specific information about some of BC's pre-arrival services in AMSSA's latest webinar.

The Supporting the Alignment of Pre and Post Arrival Services for Newcomers webinar, which was funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), included special presentations by IRCC, and Immigration Research West (IRW) while, some BC pre-arrival services shared information about their programs. Bridging opportunities to align pre and post arrival services were shared as well.

Learn about the Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants Program

AMSSA hosted a webinar, funded by the Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology, to provide information about the new BC program Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants which replaced Skills Connect in early 2017. The Career Paths program offers customized career counselling, training supports and occupation specific language training to newcomers to Canada.

Get Tips on How Service Providers can Support Clients with Disabilities

What are some of the barriers that newcomers with disabilities face when integrating into Canadian society? AMSSA's webinar Supporting Clients with Disabilities, funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, sought to answer this question and more.The webinar provided information on supporting clients with disabilities as well as referral details to settlement and language service provider organizations.

Broaden your understanding of diversity and inclusion. AMSSA's Safe Harbour online training is great for individuals wanting a self-paced learning experience or as an introductory course on diversity and inclusion. 

The eLearning online course is also an excellent way for employers to educate staff on important concepts, and create opportunities for follow-up discussion, to support inclusive workplaces.
