According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the world’s largest anti-fraud organization, one in ten reported fraud cases between 2016 and 2024 occurred at non-profit organizations (NPOs), resulting in median losses of $86,000 to $143,000 CAD per incident. Over 80% of NPOs that experienced fraud between 2021 and 2024 took steps to modify their anti-fraud controls afterward, understanding the importance of awareness and prevention measures.<\/p>\n
Settlement Service Provider Organizations (SPOs), like other NPOs, are focused on fulfilling their missions. Operating on tight budgets and often facing frequent staff turnover, SPOs may struggle to establish clear roles and robust internal controls. These characteristics can leave them particularly vulnerable to both internal and external fraud.<\/p>\n
This session is targeted to senior organizational leaders, managers and finance professionals at SPOs and will provide practical insights into controls, assessments, systems, and strategies that organizations and staff can implement to mitigate fraud risks and will provide actionable tools to enhance fraud prevention and detection within their organizations.<\/p>\n

\nSusan brings a wide range of professional experience to her clients. She spent fourteen years with Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants as a Senior Manager in the Independent Business Group. She was instrumental in developing the local firm\u2019s small business advisory and bookkeeping services departments and spent many years as the audit manager for a large variety of local charitable organizations.
\nSusan then accepted a position as Finance Director with the Victoria Foundation. As Canada\u2019s 6th largest Community Foundation, she played an instrumental role in the growth of the Foundation\u2019s assets and the organization\u2019s presence in the local charitable community. During her tenure she focused on the financial oversight of the Foundation\u2019s endowment fund(s) played a key role in the local and national community foundation movement, worked closely with many of BC\u2019s First Nations groups on specific trusts, and was part of the task force responsible for updating the Victoria Foundation Act in 2009.<\/p>\n
