In this Virtual Information Session, speakers from the Ministry of Labour will provide a comprehensive overview of key policy and program updates that are relevant to BCSIS settlement service providers.<\/p>\n

EVENT DETAILS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Settlement workers play a vital role in providing comprehensive employment supports and current labor market information to newcomer clients. In this session, settlement staff will hear from Ministry of Labour speakers, who will share key updates on programs and policies that are relevant to newcomers.  <\/p>\n

Updates from the Ministry of Labour may include information on policies aimed at protecting Temporary Foreign Workers, the updated return-to-work requirements for injured workers, the recent increases to the minimum wage for farm workers, and the new rules to keep workers safe from the danger of asbestos. Updates may also include information on the new legislation designed to deliver improved working conditions and basic employment standards to \u201conline platform workers\u201d, identified as app-based ride-hail and food-delivery workers.  <\/p>\n

Following the presentation from the Ministry of Labour, there will be an opportunity for attendees to participate in a Q&A with the speakers.  <\/p>\n

SPEAKERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jake Ayers, Director, Labour Policy and Legislation,
\nBritish Columbia Ministry of Labour<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jake has worked in the Ministry of Labour\u2019s Labour Policy and Legislation Branch for 19 years.  For most of that time, Jake was in a Senior Policy Advisor role. As Director of the Policy and Legislation Branch, Jake is responsible for overseeing the development of advice and analysis to assist government on a wide variety of policy and legislative initiatives touching on all areas of labour and employment law. Jake has an educational background in political science and economics.<\/p>\n

Lydia Zucconi, Senior Policy Advisor,
\n<\/strong>British Columbia Ministry of Labour<\/strong><\/p>\n

A UVic Law grad, Lydia has over a decade of experience with policy and legislation. She has worked for the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the Ministry of Labour. Since joining the Ministry of Labour two years ago, she has worked on several initiatives including paid sick leave and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.<\/p>\n

Kaitlin Johnston Kislock, Senior Policy Advisor,
\nBritish Columbia Ministry of Labour<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Ottawa law grad with eight years of experience in the B.C. Public Service, Kaitlin has worked on policy and legislation initiatives related to police complaints, cannabis regulation and civil forfeiture. Her current areas of focus are child employment and minimum wages.<\/p>\n
