SUMMARY:AMSSATalk: Impact of Art as a Form of Cultural Exchange for Newcomers in B.C.’s Settlement Sector
DESCRIPTION:Le francais suit… \nThe settlement journey of newcomers is often a period of change and adjustment to new communities and ways of life. This change can affect an individual’s sense of belonging and create feelings of disconnect from cultural upbringing and traditions. Art in different forms\, in time of this change\, is often used as an outlet and method to process their settlement journeys. Additionally\, art is used as a form of cultural exchange\, bringing and sharing pieces of their traditions and culture with their new communities.   \nThis AMSSATalk will bring together newcomer artists to discuss the impact of art as a form of cultural exchange when settling into B.C. In addition to sharing their art live with us\, the presenters will reflect on their connection to their art as it relates to their immigration journey\, the value of art as a medium of cultural exchange\, and how the settlement sector can incorporate or use art as a means of establishing connections and promoting integration.  \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nAMSSATalk: Impact of Art as a Form of Cultural Exchange for Newcomers in B.C.’s Settlement Sector   \nDate: January 29\, 2025 \nTime: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Pacific Time)  \nLocation: Zoom | Event details will be sent after registration   \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nMODERATORS \nTaslim Samji is an internationally acclaimed\, multi-disciplinary Canadian artist\, curator\, cultural leader\, spoken word poet\, and published author. She is renowned for curating thought-provoking exhibitions that highlight the stories of immigrants and the work of marginalized artists\, particularly in response to anti-Muslim racism and xenophobia. Through her art\, Samji delves into themes of identity\, pluralism\, and shared perspectives. Over her career she has garnered numerous  for her contributions to the arts.  As a dedicated community leader\, Samji serves on various boards\, mentors emerging artists\, and advocates for underrepresented voices in the local art scene. She continually seeks innovative ways to uplift\, inspire\, educate\, and heal through her creative endeavors. \nPANELISTS \nAdriana Contreras Correal is an Interdisciplinary Artist\, bilingual Graphic Recorder and Illustrator (English and Spanish)\, and dedicated auntie\, born in Bogotá\, Colombia\, living respect and gratitude on the traditional unceded territory of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh  Nations. Artistic expression has always been a central part of Adriana’s life but became an essential tool for navigating the world as a first-generation immigrant. \nHer migration journey profoundly informs her work and commitment to social justice at a local and global level. Her role as a Visual Practitioner is to witness\, listen deeply\, gather information\, connect ideas and tell stories. Graphic Recording serves as a living memory of the time we share in dialogue; it is a form of harvesting and mapping of collective wisdom\, stories\, reflections\, questions\, and commitments to future action. \nAdriana completed her BFA at SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts in 2006 and has worked and volunteered at numerous Arts and community-based organizations for over 20 years. She is the founder of MareVerso Creative. \nTaraneh Mousavi is an Iranian vocalist\, composer\, and artist recognized for her unique blend of Iranian folk music\, alternative jazz\, and evocative poetry. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Hochschule für Musik und Tanz  Köln (Cologne\, Germany) and a master’s in Global Jazz from Berklee College of Music (Boston\, USA)\, where she studied on a full scholarship. Taraneh’s work explores profound themes of identity\, belonging\, and transformation. Her upcoming EP\, Home Is a River\, offers an intimate reflection on the shifting meaning of home and the emotional journey of immigration. \nWalid Azizi is a Youth Equity Worker with SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) program at Impact North Shore\, a non-profit organization providing services for newcomers and im/migrants and promoting inclusive community building. Born and raised in Afghanistan\, Walid is the founding member and director of Camp Afghanistan; an initiative focused on empowering Afghan youth through education\, leadership\, and art. The camp incorporates arts sessions and features local artists\, emphasizing the role of art and education in creating spaces for intercultural dialogue and social change. With a background in History (Miami University) and International Politics (American University of Central Asia)\, Walid has been actively involved in international platforms and conferences\, presenting on the transformative role of art in societal development. He has a deep appreciation for art in various forms\, particularly literature\, poetry\, and music – resonating with Van Gogh’s perspective: Even in the face of adversity\, there still remains within us calmness\, pure harmony\, poetry\, and music. \nADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTED ARTISTS \nHasan Al-Saleh was born in the historic city of Damascus\, known for its ancient monuments. Since childhood\, he has loved drawing and creating art with wood. Drawing remained a hobby of his until he finished high school. Hasan wanted to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts\, but it wasn’t possible due to my circumstances. Over time\, art and drawing became a big part of his life. He especially enjoys drawing ancient monuments that tell stories from history and scenes from nature. \n
