SUMMARY:Financial Literacy: Introduction to Banking and Credit in Canada for Migrant Workers
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the banking system is an essential component of adapting to life in Canada. Newly arrived migrant workers are often unaware of how the banking system works in Canada. This places them at significant risk of fraud or making mistakes that can impact their financial situation in a negative way. \nThe purpose of this webinar is to provide organizations who provide support services to migrant workers with information on what newly arrived migrant workers need to be aware of when it comes to the banking system in Canada. By having this information\, service providers will be better equipped to answer questions and support migrant workers to avoid potential confusion\, mistakes\, or fraud. \nThe Financial Consumer Agency of Canada will offer direction on topics such as how to build a credit history in Canada\, things to be aware of when opening a bank account/dealing with banks\, credit cards and other types of credits\, choosing a financial advisor\, and privacy and fraud risks to be aware of. \nWebinar: Financial Literacy: Introduction to Banking and Credit in Canada for Migrant Workers\nDate: Tuesday\, January 26\, 2021\nTime: 10:00 am to 11:30 am* (PST)\nLocation: Online | You will receive the web link via email after registering \nPlease Register HERE.

SUMMARY:AMSSATalk: Climate Change Displacement & Environmental Racism
DESCRIPTION:This AMSSATalk is for any settlement and integration staff wanting to learn more about the connections between climate change\, service delivery and human rights. Key intersecting realities include Indigenous land-based awareness\, local provincial displacement and environmental racism. Viewers will hear speakers consider ways to bring people and communities to the centre of the conversation and how to support newcomers with accessing health\, employment and other services during and after climate emergency response situations and always. \nCurrently\, there is no refugee designation for those displaced by climate change. However\, as the impacts of climate change increase\, so is the number of people displaced by natural disasters and environmental degradation. The World Bank has estimated that by 2050\, there will be 143 million more climate migrants from Latin America\, sub-Saharan Africa\, and Southeast Asia alone. \nMeanwhile\, within Canada\, climate change is impacting internal displacement (wildfires in BC) and further displacing Indigenous Peoples from their lands. Racism and colonialism continue to permeate all layers of our society and as a result of environmental racism\, climate change disproportionately impacts marginalized communities\, particularly BIPOC and/or poor communities. \nRegister to join to the AMSSATalk and stay for a live Q&A period with our speakers. This talk compliments the AMSSA Migration Matters info sheet on the same topic. \nDate: Thursday February 11\, 2021\nTime: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (PST)\nOnline: Upon registering\, you’ll receive a Zoom link the day before the event\nPlease register HERE. \nRegistration deadline: Wednesday February 10\, 2021 \n3:00 PM (PST)

SUMMARY:AMSSA Lecture: Telling a Story Through Data Visualization
DESCRIPTION:Settlement and integration service providers collect and use data on a daily basis. While the data we collect is essential\, interpreting the meaning of the data can be a challenge. The AMSSA Lecture: Telling a Story Through Data Visualization will get you thinking about the data you collect and how you can use it to tell a story. Sandra Schinnerl will explore what data visualization tools can do to transform the data you have to convey your intended message to external stakeholders\, staff in your organization\, Board of Directors\, governments\, and funding agencies. You do not need to be a computer scientist or a special programmer to work with data. Discover the stories hidden within and share those stories with the world in the form of charts\, maps\, and infographics.  \nIn this lecture you will: \n\nReflect on the data you have and how you can harness it to tell a story about the work you do\nHave conversations about the data available in the settlement sector and the data you might need in the future\nReceive examples of national immigration data that has been transformed into visuals  \n\nThis lecture will provide you with some insights into using and framing your organization’s data more effectively. It is also an opportunity to provide feedback on your future data needs to be reflected in a Canadian immigration data visualization project.  \n  \nSpeaker: \nSandra Schinnerl is a doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia and her research looks at the intersections between immigration and education policy. She is a member of the advisory group for the UBC Centre for Migration Studies and is involved in its Data Hub Project that is focused on immigration data visualizations. She has been involved in a number of large data projects related to both immigration pathways and international students for government and professional associations as well in her research.  \nSandra Schinnerl is an Associate Faculty member of Royal Roads University and a UBC Public Scholar. Prior to her PhD studies. Sandra worked in the field of international education as a practitioner and senior administrator for more than 25 years. \n  \nRegistration Details:\n\nDate: Tuesday March 23\, 2021\nTime: 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (Pacific Time)\nLocation: Zoom | Event details will be sent after registration \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nRegistration deadline: Monday March 22\, 2021 at 11:59 PM (PST)

DESCRIPTION:Every manager is responsible for nurturing “the employee experience” at work. This interactive session is designed to assist settlement and integration service providers with the challenges and opportunities found in working remotely. This webinar will explore: \n• Best practices relating to remote management including remote delegation\, managing expectations\, and one-to-one meetings.\n• Concrete tips on how to battle the fatigue of working from home on virtual platforms.\n• Specific ways that settlement and integration service providers can enhance their support of each other in the workplace while adapting to the continuing challenges of working from home. \nThe session will combine a lecture format with interactive feedback and will include the participation of 2 settlement sector representatives from diverse regions of BC who will share their experiences with working remotely. To conclude\, the floor will be opened for a general “Q and A” session with the facilitator where participants will be invited to pose questions and solidify their understanding of the topics presented. \nDate: Thursday June 10\, 2021\nTime: 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (Pacific Time)\nPlease register HERE.\nSend an email to njavaher@amssa.org or call 604-718-2780
