SUMMARY:Human Resources Capacity Roundtable - Moving from Management to Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Many settlement service providers find themselves concentrating on the delivery of services while meeting multiple output and deliverable targets.  To ensure that service quality is maintained\, targets reached\, and timelines met\, it is understandable that supervisors dedicate much of their attention to managing staff and program logistics. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and self-development\, as well as how their organizations can shift their people development strategy to develop staff as leaders.  \nThe session is targeted to staff in management positions\, HR staff\, and staff who are in a supervisory capacity.   \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nDate: Friday\, February 28\, 2025 \nTime: 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. PST \nLocation: Zoom - Event details will be emailed immediately after registration \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nPRESENTER \nZahra Emsail (she/her) \nVantage Point Staff Facilitator \nZahra is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Vantage Point. SUMMARY:Organizational Approaches to Anti-Racism: From Self to Systems Change
DESCRIPTION:ANTI-RACISM WEBINAR: REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION \nAs a sector that serves many vulnerable and racialized populations and is also mainly comprised of racialized frontline workers\, anti-racism is an intrinsic part of the settlement sector. Yet often we are challenged by a lack of resources and time\, the systemic and entrenched nature of racism\, and limited guidance around evidence-based practices that translate good intentions into meaningful systemic change. Although there are a range of anti-racist actions that are often looked to as tools to start this work—policies\, trainings\, employee resource groups\, hiring practices\, audits\, etc.—it can be difficult to discern what approaches will translate into material changes rather than act as surface-level distractions from the root issues.   \nThis two-part webinar will focus on providing organizations with tools and resources that they can apply to their anti-racism work\, with an opportunity to discuss how to implement impactful initiatives\, develop more meaningful and systematic evaluation\, and create long-term plans that meet the unique needs of the settlement sector. \nPart 1 will start by situating the conversation about anti-racism within the experiences of frontline staff navigating their day-to-day work with clients. Recognizing that it is often difficult for frontline staff to support themselves and their clients without organizational support\, this webinar will explore how to shift individual approaches to anti-racist work towards more collaborative\, systems-focused change. \nDate: February 18\, 2025\nTime: 1:00 – 3:00pm PT  \nLocation: Zoom \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nSPEAKER \nSharon Nyangweso is the Founder and CEO of QuakeLab\, she specializes in a radical new approach to problem solving with an equity lens that is measurable\, strategic\, and based on a strong foundation of design thinking. An immigrant from Kenya\, she has worked across sectors with organizations in 11 countries. Sharon is a TEDx Speaker\, a Globe & Mail Report on Business Magazine 2022 Changemakers Recipient\, 2022 Black Entrepreneur nominee and Ottawa Consulting Agency of the Year 2023. \nQUESTIONS? \nSend an email to enguyen@amssa.org

SUMMARY:AMSSATalk: Impact of Art as a Form of Cultural Exchange for Newcomers in B.C.’s Settlement Sector
DESCRIPTION:Le francais suit… \nThe settlement journey of newcomers is often a period of change and adjustment to new communities and ways of life. This change can affect an individual’s sense of belonging and create feelings of disconnect from cultural upbringing and traditions. Art in different forms\, in time of this change\, is often used as an outlet and method to process their settlement journeys. Additionally\, art is used as a form of cultural exchange\, bringing and sharing pieces of their traditions and culture with their new communities.   \nThis AMSSATalk will bring together newcomer artists to discuss the impact of art as a form of cultural exchange when settling into B.C. In addition to sharing their art live with us\, the presenters will reflect on their connection to their art as it relates to their immigration journey\, the value of art as a medium of cultural exchange\, and how the settlement sector can incorporate or use art as a means of establishing connections and promoting integration.  \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nAMSSATalk: Impact of Art as a Form of Cultural Exchange for Newcomers in B.C.’s Settlement Sector   \nDate: January 29\, 2025 \nTime: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Pacific Time)  \nLocation: Zoom | Event details will be sent after registration   \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nMODERATORS \nTaslim Samji is an internationally acclaimed\, multi-disciplinary Canadian artist\, curator\, cultural leader\, spoken word poet\, and published author. Since childhood\, he has loved drawing and creating art with wood. Drawing remained a hobby of his until he finished high school. Hasan wanted to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts\, but it wasn’t possible due to my circumstances. Over time\, art and drawing became a big part of his life. He especially enjoys drawing ancient monuments that tell stories from history and scenes from nature. \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Information Session on Establishing Professional Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:Professional boundaries are an essential skill set for anyone working in direct services\, including settlement practitioners. Professional boundaries are a commonly cited occupational competency for settlement practitioners as it creates a clear understanding of the limits of the services provided\, the scope of work and the professional obligations of the staff and organization\, all which set the foundation for a better relationship between staff and clients.  \n  \nIt is understandable that settlement practitioners want to help their clients as much as possible as these clients may be vulnerable and face multiple barriers. They may feel responsibility for their client and feel empathy because they too may have once been in the same situation when they first came to Canada. However\, these are reasons why the maintenance of professional boundaries is important. When boundaries are not set and maintained\, the risks of compassion fatigue and burnout increase.  \n  \nThis session is targeted to front-line settlement workers and will provide information on setting healthy\, professional boundaries as a way to enhance service delivery and provide an understanding of the risk management considerations for settlement staff\, their organizations and clients when boundaries are not set. This session will identify the challenges to setting these boundaries and offer concrete strategies to create and maintain professional boundaries.  \nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the presenter.   \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nDate: Tuesday\, December 10\, 2024     \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. PST    \nLocation: Zoom Webinar - Event details will be emailed immediately after registration    \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nPRESENTER \nMona Hassannia\, MA\, RCC   \nMona Hassannia has over 15-years of front-line and management experience in the BC settlement and integration sector working with various populations including government-assisted refugees (GARs)\, refugee claimants\, migrants\, and immigrants. She is also a Registered Clinical Counsellor\, bringing this experience into her work both as a service provider and accomplished trainer\, developing toolkits\, training and curriculum to strengthen the field. \nQUESTIONS? \nSend an email to Fernanda Hurtado at  fhurtado@amssa.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Information Session: Supporting Naturalized Canadian Citizen Seniors
DESCRIPTION:While becoming a Naturalized Canadian Citizen may indicate a certain level of adjustment and settlement\, there are still settlement-related challenges faced even after several years in Canada\, particularly for seniors. Studies show that long-term immigrant seniors were at higher risk of loneliness than the Canadian-born seniors population. This may affect existing health related issues and economic issues that are particularly experienced by seniors. Naturalized Canadian Citizen seniors may also face the many challenges experienced by seniors of all backgrounds such as housing precarity\, economic difficulties and access to health services but exacerbated by their immigrant experience. With many Naturalized Canadian Citizen seniors being supported through the BC Newcomer Services Program\, it is important for service providers to understand their unique needs.  \nThis session is targeted to front-line settlement workers to provide information on the common settlement needs of seniors\, why these needs occur\, and the potential challenges serving a senior population. This session will offer concrete strategies to overcome these challenges\, ways to meet needs\, and methods to outreach to this specific population.  \nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the speakers. \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nDate: Monday\, October 28\, 2024     \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. PST    \nLocation: Zoom Webinar - Event details will be emailed immediately after registration \nREGISTER HERE\nSPEAKERS \nDaisy Au  – Coordinator\, Seniors Club Settlement & Family Services (MOSAIC)  \nDaisy has over 20 years of experience in the immigrant settlement sector. SUMMARY:Virtual Information Session: Mental Health and Wellness for International Post-Secondary Students
DESCRIPTION:In this Virtual Information Session\, frontline staff will learn about the mental health challenges that International Post-Secondary students face\, and actions that can promote wellness. Speakers will include representatives from settlement service organizations and post-secondary institutions who will share their multi-faceted experiences that are applicable to all types of service providers. \nMental health challenges can threaten International Post-Secondary students’ well-being\, jeopardizing their current academic and future aspirations. Financial stressors can be challenging\, with rising tuition\, food and housing costs exacerbating the number of international students living in unsuitable housing and/or accessing food banks.  As full-time studies are a requirement for a work permit\, it is difficult to balance academics with needed work hours.  Additionally\, as with many newcomers\, International Post-Secondary Students face culture shock and social isolation\, as well as worries about their families or conflicts back in their home country. \nThis session is targeted to front-line staff and settlement workers supporting International Post-Secondary students. Speakers will provide an overview of the stressors affecting these students’ mental health and wellness\, share services and programs available in the community and on campuses\, provide practical actions that can be implemented by post-secondary institutions and community service providers\, and provide examples how the settlement sector and post-secondary institutions can work together to support the mental health and wellness of International Post-Secondary students. \nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the speakers. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nDate: Wednesday\, October 9\, 2024 \nTime:  1:00 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. PST   \nLocation:  Zoom Webinar - Event details will be emailed immediately after registration   \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nSPEAKERS \nRyan Drew \nDirector of Integrated Services for Newcomers  \nS.U.C.C.E.S.S.  \nRyan began her career at S.U.C.C.E.S.S. 25 years ago.
