SUMMARY:AMSSATalk Virtual Event Supporting Newcomer Women Through the Shifting World Post COVID-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:(Le français suit…) \n \nAs the global resistance for women’s rights continues to unfold\, it is time to reflect on how the increase of equal rights demands parallel to the intensified gender-based inequalities that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light and how they disproportionally impact newcomer women and their journey to settlement.\n \nJoin us for the AMSSATalk Supporting newcomer women through the shifting world post COVID-19 Pandemic to hear from a panel of expert speakers who reflect on how the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the gender inequalities and their adverse impact on newcomer women\, specifically those who settled in Canada within the past five years. The theme of the AMSSATalk will be to capture women’s resistance in various forms as response to the changes and inequalities manifested by the COVID-19 pandemic. \n \nUtilizing an intersectional lens\, this AMSSATalk will feature women who play various roles within the settlement sector and provide a platform for them to share their experiences\, perspectives\, and insight on how they have been supporting newcomer women during the transitionary since the COVID-19 Pandemic.\n \n\nAMSSATalk: Supporting Newcomer Women Through the Shifting World Post COVID-19 Pandemic\nDate: Monday\, March 6\, 2023\nTime: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. PST\nLocation: Zoom Webinar – Event details will be emailed immediately after registration\n \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n\n\n \nMariam Bouchoutrouch\, PIRS\nMariam has more than 35 years of experience in the community social service sector\, 15 years in leadership roles. Mariam’s passion for the non-profit sector started in university where she was a founding coordinator of the McGill Walk Safe Network (which spread to universities across Canada as Safe Walk). She also founded two programs for families with young children in Vancouver. \nMariam’s goal is to build a deliberately developmental organization that encourages the potential of immigrant women to grow into their leadership potential. \n \n\nKhatira Daryabi\nKhatira Daryabi is an Afghan social activist who is currently studying a dual degree in Psychology\, International Relations and Business Management at the University of British Columbia\, Canada. She was a finalist for the 2020 International Children’s Peace Prize\, awarded the 2022 Vancouver Award of Excellence\, and nominated for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award for 2022-2023.\n \n\nZahra Esmail\, Vantage Point\nZahra is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Vantage Point\, which provides training and capacity building support to non-profit organizations across BC. She strongly advocates that any organization can be truly equitable only if all its employees take on an individual as well as a collective responsibility towards systemic change. \nHer lived experiences coming from India where there is race\, class\, gender\, age\, religion\, education\, and all kinds of inequities that one can think of to Canada that at least outwardly celebrates diversity and inclusion have sparked an interest in her to delve deeper into the realities of one’s identity and how it can be both empowering and oppressing. \nSandhya holds an MA in Adult Education (University of British Columbia\, 2007) and an MA in English (India\, 2000). She is a certified Intercultural Practitioner (Norquest College\, 2018). \n\n\n\n
