SUMMARY:Refugees and Borders: Remapping the World We Think We Know
DESCRIPTION:flyer final 201119 – Refugees and Borders \nBorders are first imagined and then built. What we think borders can do is shaped by the stories we tell.\nWhat is your border story? \nRegister today for this free webinar Refugees and Borders: Remapping the World We Think We Know where you can ask questions and participate in dialogue with lived-experience and academic experts. \nEvent Details:\n05 December 2020\, Saturday\n2-4 pm Pacific Standard Time\nRegister HERE. \n This webinar begins with a virtual screening of Borderstory\, a Worn Words short documentary and dialogue-opener about what the word ‘border’ means to us. Following the film\, cross-sector experts will engage questions as part of a panel discussion on the word ‘border’ and give concrete suggestions for policy and law. Participants are invited to ask honest questions and participate in dialogue based on personal experience and collective curiosity. As global and country citizens\, we’ll imagine incremental ways our idea of ‘border” can increasingly become more human-centred and benefit the safety needs of people seeking refuge while honouring the practical need for boundaries.

SUMMARY:Financial Literacy: Introduction to Banking and Credit in Canada for Migrant Workers
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the banking system is an essential component of adapting to life in Canada. Newly arrived migrant workers are often unaware of how the banking system works in Canada. This places them at significant risk of fraud or making mistakes that can impact their financial situation in a negative way. \nThe purpose of this webinar is to provide organizations who provide support services to migrant workers with information on what newly arrived migrant workers need to be aware of when it comes to the banking system in Canada. By having this information\, service providers will be better equipped to answer questions and support migrant workers to avoid potential confusion\, mistakes\, or fraud. \nThe Financial Consumer Agency of Canada will offer direction on topics such as how to build a credit history in Canada\, things to be aware of when opening a bank account/dealing with banks\, credit cards and other types of credits\, choosing a financial advisor\, and privacy and fraud risks to be aware of. \nWebinar: Financial Literacy: Introduction to Banking and Credit in Canada for Migrant Workers\nDate: Tuesday\, January 26\, 2021\nTime: 10:00 am to 11:30 am* (PST)\nLocation: Online | You will receive the web link via email after registering \nPlease Register HERE.

SUMMARY:AMSSATalk: Climate Change Displacement & Environmental Racism
DESCRIPTION:This AMSSATalk is for any settlement and integration staff wanting to learn more about the connections between climate change\, service delivery and human rights. Key intersecting realities include Indigenous land-based awareness\, local provincial displacement and environmental racism. Viewers will hear speakers consider ways to bring people and communities to the centre of the conversation and how to support newcomers with accessing health\, employment and other services during and after climate emergency response situations and always. \nCurrently\, there is no refugee designation for those displaced by climate change. However\, as the impacts of climate change increase\, so is the number of people displaced by natural disasters and environmental degradation. The World Bank has estimated that by 2050\, there will be 143 million more climate migrants from Latin America\, sub-Saharan Africa\, and Southeast Asia alone. \nMeanwhile\, within Canada\, climate change is impacting internal displacement (wildfires in BC) and further displacing Indigenous Peoples from their lands. Racism and colonialism continue to permeate all layers of our society and as a result of environmental racism\, climate change disproportionately impacts marginalized communities\, particularly BIPOC and/or poor communities. \nRegister to join to the AMSSATalk and stay for a live Q&A period with our speakers. This talk compliments the AMSSA Migration Matters info sheet on the same topic. \nDate: Thursday February 11\, 2021\nTime: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (PST)\nOnline: Upon registering\, you’ll receive a Zoom link the day before the event\nPlease register HERE. \nRegistration deadline: Wednesday February 10\, 2021 \n3:00 PM (PST)
