SUMMARY:Organizational Capacity Roundtable - Succession Planning for Business Continuity
DESCRIPTION:Settlement service provider organizations continue to face challenges in the critical area of human resources capacity building. Current economic conditions such as affordability and high cost of living have exacerbated struggles related to capacity in HR\, such as stretched resources and recruitment difficulties to name a few. Settlement service providers also face the same challenges as Canada of an aging workforce. Even while baby boomers are remaining in the workforce longer\, projections show that there may be 50% more people retiring in 2025 than the average of the last 10 years. \nWhether it be for extended leaves such as parental or medical\, an unexpected departure or a planned one\, losing key staff can create several challenges for settlement service organizations. This includes leadership gaps\, loss of expertise and knowledge of the organization and uncertainty for staff and potential of low morale just to name a few challenges\, all of which affect the quality and amount of service offered. \nThis workshop will provide an understanding of the steps and considerations to succession planning\, the roles that each staff member may play in this and tips for developing a concrete succession plan. SUMMARY:Virtual Information Session: Fraud Awareness and Prevention for Settlement Service Provider Organizations
DESCRIPTION:According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE)\, the world’s largest anti-fraud organization\, one in ten reported fraud cases between 2016 and 2024 occurred at non-profit organizations (NPOs)\, resulting in median losses of $86\,000 to $143\,000 CAD per incident. Over 80% of NPOs that experienced fraud between 2021 and 2024 took steps to modify their anti-fraud controls afterward\, understanding the importance of awareness and prevention measures. \nSettlement Service Provider Organizations (SPOs)\, like other NPOs\, are focused on fulfilling their missions. Operating on tight budgets and often facing frequent staff turnover\, SPOs may struggle to establish clear roles and robust internal controls. SUMMARY:Organizational Approaches to Anti-Racism: From Self to Systems Change
DESCRIPTION:ANTI-RACISM WEBINAR: REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION \nAs a sector that serves many vulnerable and racialized populations and is also mainly comprised of racialized frontline workers\, anti-racism is an intrinsic part of the settlement sector. Yet often we are challenged by a lack of resources and time\, the systemic and entrenched nature of racism\, and limited guidance around evidence-based practices that translate good intentions into meaningful systemic change. Although there are a range of anti-racist actions that are often looked to as tools to start this work—policies\, trainings\, employee resource groups\, hiring practices\, audits\, etc.—it can be difficult to discern what approaches will translate into material changes rather than act as surface-level distractions from the root issues.   \nThis two-part webinar will focus on providing organizations with tools and resources that they can apply to their anti-racism work\, with an opportunity to discuss how to implement impactful initiatives\, develop more meaningful and systematic evaluation\, and create long-term plans that meet the unique needs of the settlement sector. \nPart 2 will continue the discussion of organizational approaches to anti-racism\, expanding on how to develop equity as a technical skill to implement anti-racist practices throughout an organization. SUMMARY:Workshop - Incorporating Art in the Work with Children – Expressive Arts Therapy to Support Neurodivergent Newcomer Children
DESCRIPTION:Expressive arts therapy has shown benefits for children across various developmental stages\, as well as neurodiverse children who may struggle with traditional classroom settings and communication barriers. It allows for self-expression without the need for words\, reduces overstimulation\, and soothes the nervous systems\, encourages creativity and collaboration\, and provides a calming and structured activity that empowers children to utilize their creativity and build on their strengths.   \nThis workshop will examine the advantages of expressive arts therapy that can be applied to newcomer children from early years to school age\, who face unique challenges due to the complex emotions that may arise during their journey of settling into a new community or school. SUMMARY:Organizational Approaches to Anti-Racism: From Self to Systems Change
DESCRIPTION:ANTI-RACISM WEBINAR: REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION \nAs a sector that serves many vulnerable and racialized populations and is also mainly comprised of racialized frontline workers\, anti-racism is an intrinsic part of the settlement sector. Yet often we are challenged by a lack of resources and time\, the systemic and entrenched nature of racism\, and limited guidance around evidence-based practices that translate good intentions into meaningful systemic change. Although there are a range of anti-racist actions that are often looked to as tools to start this work—policies\, trainings\, employee resource groups\, hiring practices\, audits\, etc.—it can be difficult to discern what approaches will translate into material changes rather than act as surface-level distractions from the root issues.   \nThis two-part webinar will focus on providing organizations with tools and resources that they can apply to their anti-racism work\, with an opportunity to discuss how to implement impactful initiatives\, develop more meaningful and systematic evaluation\, and create long-term plans that meet the unique needs of the settlement sector. \nPart 1 will start by situating the conversation about anti-racism within the experiences of frontline staff navigating their day-to-day work with clients. DESCRIPTION:Mental Health is a critical issue that affects workers across many fields\, in many different ways. Temporary foreign workers\, in particular\, are more marginalized due to their temporary immigration status. In addition\, they may be unfamiliar with WorkSafeBC policies\, how it functions and what their rights are.   \nThis workshop will cover what a mental claim might include\, the information that they need to provide when making this type of claim and what the process would look like. She continually seeks innovative ways to uplift\, inspire\, educate\, and heal through her creative endeavors. \nPANELISTS \nAdriana Contreras Correal is an Interdisciplinary Artist\, bilingual Graphic Recorder and Illustrator (English and Spanish)\, and dedicated auntie\, born in Bogotá\, Colombia\, living respect and gratitude on the traditional unceded territory of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh  Nations. Artistic expression has always been a central part of Adriana’s life but became an essential tool for navigating the world as a first-generation immigrant. \nHer migration journey profoundly informs her work and commitment to social justice at a local and global level. Her role as a Visual Practitioner is to witness\, listen deeply\, gather information\, connect ideas and tell stories. Graphic Recording serves as a living memory of the time we share in dialogue; it is a form of harvesting and mapping of collective wisdom\, stories\, reflections\, questions\, and commitments to future action. \nAdriana completed her BFA at SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts in 2006 and has worked and volunteered at numerous Arts and community-based organizations for over 20 years. She is the founder of MareVerso Creative. \nTaraneh Mousavi is an Iranian vocalist\, composer\, and artist recognized for her unique blend of Iranian folk music\, alternative jazz\, and evocative poetry. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Hochschule für Musik und Tanz  Köln (Cologne\, Germany) and a master’s in Global Jazz from Berklee College of Music (Boston\, USA)\, where she studied on a full scholarship. Taraneh’s work explores profound themes of identity\, belonging\, and transformation. Her upcoming EP\, Home Is a River\, offers an intimate reflection on the shifting meaning of home and the emotional journey of immigration. \nWalid Azizi is a Youth Equity Worker with SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) program at Impact North Shore\, a non-profit organization providing services for newcomers and im/migrants and promoting inclusive community building. Born and raised in Afghanistan\, Walid is the founding member and director of Camp Afghanistan; an initiative focused on empowering Afghan youth through education\, leadership\, and art. The camp incorporates arts sessions and features local artists\, emphasizing the role of art and education in creating spaces for intercultural dialogue and social change. With a background in History (Miami University) and International Politics (American University of Central Asia)\, Walid has been actively involved in international platforms and conferences\, presenting on the transformative role of art in societal development. He has a deep appreciation for art in various forms\, particularly literature\, poetry\, and music – resonating with Van Gogh’s perspective: Even in the face of adversity\, there still remains within us calmness\, pure harmony\, poetry\, and music. \nADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTED ARTISTS \nHasan Al-Saleh was born in the historic city of Damascus\, known for its ancient monuments. Since childhood\, he has loved drawing and creating art with wood. Drawing remained a hobby of his until he finished high school. Hasan wanted to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts\, but it wasn’t possible due to my circumstances. Over time\, art and drawing became a big part of his life. Depuis son enfance\, Hasan adore dessiner et créer des œuvres d’art avec du bois. Le dessin est demeuré l’un de ses passe-temps préférés jusqu’à la fin de ses études secondaires. Il aurait voulu étudier à la faculté des beaux-arts\, mais cela n’a pas été possible en raison de sa situation. Au fil du temps\, l’art et le dessin ont occupé de plus en plus de place dans sa vie. Il aime particulièrement dessiner des monuments anciens qui racontent l’histoire et des scènes de la nature. \n
