SUMMARY:Refugee Rights Day Public Forum
DESCRIPTION:MOSAIC presents the Refugee Rights Day Public Forum “The Big Picture: What does the Economic Integration of Refugees Look like in the long run?” \nPresented by Dr. Dan Hiebert\, this forum summarizes a newly available data source showing economic outcomes for refugees and immigrants over a 31-year period\, from 1980 to 2011\, in Canada’s six largest cities. \nAlthough it is a common understanding that refugees in Canada face economic and other barriers throughout their lives\, the new data indicate that despite prolonged economic marginalization\, most are able to achieve financial independence and even upward economic mobility. The results of the presented analysis will be relevant for the way Canadians view our refugee programs. \nEvent Details: \nWhen: April 4\, 5:30 -7:00 pm\nWhere: MOSAIC Head Office\, 1720 Grant St. Vancouver\, BC\nCost: Free entry\nLight refreshments will be available \nFor more information\, call 604-254-9626 \nTo view the poster click here.

SUMMARY:Newcomer Women - Barriers\, Challenges\, and Supports
DESCRIPTION:Women often face multiple barriers when accessing settlement and language programming. It can be difficult to find appropriate transportation\, childcare\, and family supports so that mothers can attend programs. Additionally\, although the language classroom can be an ideal context to discuss women’s issues\, these issues are seldom addressed. The instructor is a respected and trusted leader of the classroom; addressing women’s issues can validate and empower all individuals in the class to make a meaningful change. Topics such as women’s rights\, sexual health\, and domestic abuse can be initiated in a supportive manner that increases awareness and prevention. \nImmigrant women play a unique and distinct role within the settlement and integration context and this e-symposium will bring awareness to the barriers women face when trying to access settlement and language programming\, and highlight the need to incorporate women’s issues into language instruction and curriculum. \nThis e-symposium is being held on March 8th to coincide with International Women’s Day and will address four key areas: \n• Settlement Supports\n• Language Needs\n• Women’s Health\n• Violence against Women \nEvent Details:\nDate: Wednesday\, March 8\, 2017\nTime: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm (PST)\nLocation: Online\nCost: $10 for AMSSA Members per connection; $20 for non-members. If your organization is funded by Immigration\, Refugees\, and Citizenship Canada – please connect with sziegler@amssa.org as discounts may apply \nTo register\, click here. \nNote: The registration deadline is Tuesday\, March 7\, 2017 at 3:00 pm PST \nPresenters: \nAjlin Mehmedi\, Women’s Facilitator – Immigrant Women’s Peer Support Program\, ISSofBC \nAmea Wilbur\, Manager of Programs\, Pacific Immigration Resources Society \nAnna Foschi\, Volunteer’s Coordinator\, Vancouver & Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Services \nCaitlin Johnston\, Program Manager; Gyne & Sexual Health\, Sexual Assault Service\, and Primary Care BC Women’s Hospital and Health Care
