SUMMARY:BCSIS Virtual Information Session: IMMIGRATION INFORMATION VERSUS IMMIGRATION ADVICE
DESCRIPTION:In this Virtual Information Session\, Peter Christensen from Social and Discretionary Policy and Programs at Immigration\, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will discuss the fundamental and complex topic of the differences between immigration information and immigration advice. He will clarify the Settlement Worker’s role and boundaries in the provision of immigration supports\, and will include situational examples. The session will be particularly helpful for frontline settlement staff\, and will include a Q&A session. \nThe Government of Canada’s 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan outlines an ambitious plan to welcome newcomers\, and settlement workers sometimes feel pressured to support clients with their immigration applications. However\, it is important for staff to be aware of the scope of their role and the services they are legally allowed to provide in accordance with the provisions highlighted in Section 91 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). It is essential for Settlement Workers to confidently and clearly be able to distinguish between immigration information and advice. \nEvent Details and Registration: \nDate: Wednesday\, July 13\, 2022 \nTime: 10:00 am – 11:30 am PT \nLocation: Zoom \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \nPresenter: \nPeter Christensen – Assistant Director\, Immigration\, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (Immigration Consultants Unit) \nPeter serves as the lead on S91 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (covering who can provide advice and representation for consideration on immigration applications) and also leads the implementation of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants. A former IRCC foreign service officer\, prior to his current role\, Peter completed postings at the Canadian Embassy\, Beijing; the Consulate General of Canada\, Hong Kong; the High Commission of Canada\, New Delhi and\, most recently\, as the Migration Program Manager at the Embassy of Canada Tokyo. Previously at IRCC headquarters\, Peter managed the IRCC Situation Centre during Operation Syrian Refugees; and\, most recently\, served as Assistant Director of the Immigration Representative Coordination Unit\, the operational lead on immigration representation. \nTO SUBMIT ADVANCED QUESTIONS FOR THE SPEAKER\, PLEASE USE THE LINK BELOW: \nhttps://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GDJYN9C \nFor all other questions about the session\, please email Savrina at skarimi@amssa.org.

SUMMARY:New Perspectives Series: Indigenous Views on Immigration to Turtle Island
DESCRIPTION:As part of ISSofBC (50 years since incorporation) and the Ismaili Community of BC 50th anniversary (Fall 1972 exodus from Uganda)\, we’re launching 3 moderated discussions over the Fall and Winter related to new perspectives on Immigration to Canada. Our first event\, Indigenous views on immigration to Turtle Island\, will be held online on 13th September 2022\, and will feature a panel of Indigenous leaders from across Canada\, moderated by ISSofBC’s Indigenous Advisor\, Kory Wilson. \n  \nThe event will run from 4.30-6.00pm Pacific Time (6.30-8.00pm Central Standard Time\, or 7.30pm – 9.00pm Eastern Time). \nHow have Indigenous communities historically viewed immigration to Canada? And how can greater inclusion of Indigenous communities improve immigration policies today and in the future? \n  \nThe panelists below will seek to address these questions during the event: \nCeleste Haldane: is in her second term as Chief Commissioner of the BC Treaty Commission. She is Musqueam (Coast Salish) and Metlakatla (Tsimshian) from the Sparrow and Haldane families and has European ancestry. She is a practicing lawyer specializing in Indigenous law and corporate governance. \nBrenda Gunn is a professor at the University of Manitoba\, having completed her LL.M. in Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy at the University of Arizona. As a Metis woman\, she provided technical assistance to the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. She is also the Academic & Research Director for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. \nNorm Leech: Norm has been the Executive Director for the Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre (VACPC) since May 2016. He is trained in facilitation with the Canadian Human Rights Foundation (now Equitas) and with St’at’imc Restorative Justice in Lillooet and worked with the National Centre for First Nations Governance to develop Indigenous governance models. \nShady Hafez: (he/him) is an Algonquin Anishinabe and Syrian member of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. Shady is currently a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Toronto\, a Yellowhead Institute Research Fellow and is also the Special Projects Advisor to the National Association of Friendship Centres. With over 15 years’ experience working directly with and for Indigenous communities\, Shady has supported communities in the development of programs and services related to health and social well-being to cultural resurgence and political and economic autonomy. \nIf you’re interested in attending this webinar\, you can find the registration link below. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_345Hg5oDQQ-a5U4rRxd57g

SUMMARY:BCSIS Virtual Information Session: WorkBC Employment Services
DESCRIPTION:On October 4\, AMSSA’s BCSIS Team is holding a virtual information session in which speakers will present on WorkBC Employment Services\, eligibility criteria\, pathways to employment\, supports for displaced Ukrainians and effective inter-agency referrals.  \nEVENT SUMMARY: \n\nIn this Virtual Information Session\, speakers from the Settlement Sector and the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction will provide an overview of WorkBC Employment Services and highlight the benefits of the resource for BCSIS clients. \nDuring the pandemic\, the need for employment services heighted. Referrals to external supports such as WorkBC can help to relieve pressure on BCSIS Service Providers. However\, to ensure that client referrals are successful\, it is essential that frontline settlement workers understand the services\, supports available to newcomer clients\, eligibility criteria based on immigration status\, and effective referral methods.  \nIn this session\, speakers will explore the current WorkBC pathway to employment\, temporary policies for displaced Ukrainians\, and various policy updates. Speakers will provide information on the benefits of interagency referrals\, including referral protocols\, coordinated services and effective practices in cross-agency referrals. After the presentations\, there will be a live Q&A period.\n\nEVENT REGISTRATION LINK: \nhttps://amssa-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIqduisqjguHdeGnXrCZcVrFa-XcqY6f-7I

SUMMARY:Introduction to WorkSafeBC for Migrant Worker Support Staff
DESCRIPTION:Migrant workers can be vulnerable to unsafe work and workplace hazards\, including their health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. They often lack the knowledge\, language skills and ability to exercise their right to a safe and healthy workplace. WorkSafeBC is partnering with AMSSA to develop workshops and information for settlement agencies and their support workers to help migrant workers understand and exercise their rights and receive benefits they are entitled to as workers in BC as they relate to workplace health and safety. \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nThis workshop will provide migrant worker support staff with a foundational understanding of WorkSafeBC policies relating to migrant workers. This will include core information about the Workers Compensation Act\, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations and claims. With this foundational knowledge\, participants will begin developing a deeper understanding of how best to help migrant workers access the workplace health and safety rights to which they are entitled. \nASSOCIATED LEARNING MODULES \nParticipants who complete the first workshop will be offered access to subsequent workshops and online learning modules. Subsequent modules will involve more complex and nuanced subject matter related to WorkSafeBC policies for migrant workers\, and thus completion of the first workshop is a prerequisite. \nPRESENTERS  \nRose McDonald\nOHS Consultation and Education Services\, WorkSafeBC \nJennifer Harms\nAdjudicator\, WorkSafeBC \nREGISTRATION & EVENT DETAILS \nDate: October 19\, 2022\nTime: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm PST\nLocation: Zoom – Event details will be emailed immediately after registration\nLink: click here to register
