SUMMARY:BCSIS Virtual Information Session THE BC LABOUR MARKET: PAST\, PRESENT\, AND FUTURE - AFTER
DESCRIPTION:In this Virtual Information Session\, representatives from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training will provide an overview of the recent labour market trends and discuss the impact of the COVID-19 recovery period on employment and unemployment. Recent immigration data will be considered\, and a review of the BC Labour Market Outlook forecast will highlight future labour market need and BC’s High Opportunity Occupations. \nThe British Columbia Labour Market Outlook provides a 10-year forecast of the flow of supply and demand for labour in the province. The new Outlook report was released early in February 2022.  The forecast gives British Columbians the most up-to-date information they need to make informed decisions on careers\, skills training\, education and hiring\, and it’s a valuable tool for SPOs. \nIt is important for settlement workers to be familiar with the Outlook\, to provide their clients with comprehensive employment support and current labour market information. It specifically includes insights related to immigrants and acknowledges that immigration impacts both the supply and demand side of the labour market. From 2021 to 2031\, the Outlook analysts project 1\,004\,000 job openings in British Columbia. 346\,000 new immigrant workers are expected to join the BC labour force between 2021-2031\, an increase from 263\,000 in the last 10-year forecast. This includes both permanent and temporary immigrants. \nIt is vital for settlement workers to be able to help their clients plan ahead\, in order to ensure that the next decade is filled with opportunity and prosperity. \nPRESENTERS: \n\n\n\nNaomi Pope\, PhD – Director\, Labour Market and Immigration Analysis  \nMinistry of Advanced Education and Skills Training \n\n\n\nJackie Storen – Director\, Forecasting \nMinistry of Advanced Education and Skills Training\n\n\nJackie and her team forecast changes in labour market supply and demand contained in the annual B.C. Labour Market Outlook. She is relatively new to the position having joined the Forecasting unit in January 2022. Prior to this role\, she was at BC Stats as the Director of Economic\, Business\, and Trade Statistics\, following several years as Director of Population and Demographic Analysis.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNaomi has been leading labour market and immigration information and insights since 2015\, after joining the BC Government to advance economic priorities in 2008. She has taught at the University of Victoria as a limited-term professor and holds a doctorate from the University of California\, Los Angeles. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER: \nhttps://amssa-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZctdumqqD8qE9C3WP2rpapIbrlCK8X0Sm6x \n

SUMMARY:Institution-Led Social Reform and Justice: Modernizing Gender Expression on Government-Issued ID
DESCRIPTION:The current policies for gender expression on BC government-issued ID are an example of a decade long effort in behavioural\, intellectual and social change management. Join SPPGA Adjunct Professor Natasha Thambirajah\, Dr. Daniel L. Metzger\, and Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity Grace Lore for an inside view on the evidence-based\, change management\, and stakeholder engagement practices used to gradually shift the BC health sector and provincial government towards recognizing the criticality of recognizing rights of people who are transgender or gender non-conforming to express their gender identity with minimal or no state or medical intervention. \nThis virtual talk will focus on the types of questions that we asked ourselves throughout the process\, post implementation including reflections on what different questions could have been included. Learn more about how theory was translated into practice during the process of modernizing gender expression on government-issued ID and what was learned during the process. \nPanelists: \n\nNatasha Thambirajah\, Adjunct Professor\, School of Public Policy and Global Affairs\, UBC\nDr. Daniel L. Metzger\, MD\, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics\, UBC and Pediatric Endocrinologist\, Endocrinology & Diabetes Unit\, BC Children’s Hospital\nGrace Lore\, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill and Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity\, Province of BC\n\nHosted by: The Collective for Gender+ in Research based at The Office of Regional and International Community Engagement (ORICE) at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA)\, University of British Columbia \nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Presentation on Immigration\, Education and Employment Pathways of Rural and Urban International Students in BC: What is Going On?
DESCRIPTION:The project is led by researchers at Langara College in Vancouver and the College of New Caledonia (CNC) in Prince George\, along with community partners\, Prince George Immigrant and Multicultural Service Society (IMSS)\, and South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH). Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is also a partner on the project.  \nThe purpose of the 3-year study funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is to investigate and improve outcomes for international students (IS) once they have left their Canadian postsecondary institution with the goal of aligning student intent with government and post-secondary institutional policy and the resources available to support students. To achieve this objective\, the research will identify what is working and what is not working in terms of providing strategic supports and policy frameworks to meet the needs of different stakeholders\, and to propose innovative solutions. The project findings will inform institutional\, government\, and community programming and policy to better meet the needs of IS so they are successful in what they want to achieve with respect to education\, employment\, and immigration status.  \nData collection consists of a survey of current and former international students at postsecondary institutions in Prince George and Metro Vancouver\, followed by interviews and focus groups with international students and professional stakeholders who work with IS in various capacities. The team completed the survey portion in spring 2021\, with 1\,300 international students providing information on their experiences related to education\, employment\, housing\, immigration and personal wellbeing. They have since interviewed around 100 current and former IS as well as professional folks whose work involves international students. \nBased on preliminary data and analysis\, the presentation will focus on: \nGENDERED EXPERIENCES OF SOUTH ASIAN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS  \nAT LANGARA & COLLEGE OF NEW CALEDONIA \nThe presentation will take place by ZOOM on  \nFriday\, June 10th from 1-2:30pm Pacific Time.  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.
