SUMMARY:BCSIS Virtual Information Session FRAUD PREVENTION
DESCRIPTION:In this Virtual Information Session\, representatives from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police\, Canada Border Services Agency\, and the Bank of Canada will provide an overview of the top scams affecting British Columbian residents\, especially in the time of COVID-19.\nEvery year\, thousands of Canadians fall victim to fraud. Fraudsters are quick to adapt their techniques to the latest trends and technologies\, using a variety of tactics to defraud their targets. In the first eight months of 2021 alone\, British Columbians reported losses of $3.5 million from crypto investment scams. Fraudsters are quick to capitalize on global events. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, new scams emerged. For example\, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre received reports of a text message scam tied to COVID-19 vaccine invitation notifications. \nAs newcomers are especially vulnerable to fraud\, it is essential for frontline settlement workers to be aware of existing scams and to know how to inform their clients to help protect them. This session will include an overview of the top frauds newcomers should be aware of and how criminals are contacting victims\, information on common immigration and customs fraud schemes\, and guidance on how to support and protect newcomer clients. After the presentations\, there will be a live Q&A period. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER:\nhttps://amssa-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZckdequqjorEtTagSuHoRD0nFzTWNmGwuhU

SUMMARY:Impact of the Housing Crisis on the Resettlement of Afghan Refugees
DESCRIPTION:Welcoming Afghan refugees in the Francophone and Acadian communities requires many resources and support. One of the keys to a successful transition from Afghanistan to Canada is lodging. First\, a temporary accommodation upon arrival\, and then access to a longer-term solution in the chosen community. The lack of available housing compared to the number of refugees has been an ongoing issue for many cities and communities. What is the scope of the housing crisis in Canada? \nThis webinar is targeted at direct and indirect service providers in order to feature some of the innovations addressing the housing crisis and will investigate how they could be scaled up. We will also discuss some statistics and data to present an up-to-date portrait of housing in general. We aim to also explore complementary solutions like different partnership models\, private donation or possibilities within university and college residences as well as corporate philanthropy. \nThis webinar will be offered in both French and English and have accessibility options for the hearing impaired.  \nPLEASE REGISTER HERE: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8aQR0Q1iTYS_FD9TMFKwWg

SUMMARY:Sharing Promising Practices to Support Frontline Workers in Smaller Centres
DESCRIPTION:Service providers in smaller centres experience unique challenges further complicated with being in remote locations\, long distances from nearest urban cities\, and having limited referral opportunities and resources to address the growing need. One way of how smaller centre service providers address some of these challenges is through engaging in collaboration with other settlement sector organizations and community partners. Engaging in collaboration often gives organizations in smaller centres increased access to resources that many would not have had access to otherwise. However\, collaboration can also present its challenges with managing power dynamics and building trust without having the proper tools and experience with building an effective partnership and collaboration. \n\n\n  \n\n\nThe current webinar will provide smaller centre service providers with tools for engaging in collaboration. In doing so\, two smaller centre service providers\, one from BC and one from Manitoba\, will share their first-hand lived experiences of engaging in collaboration and provide tips and tricks for others to learn from their example and potentially apply the learnings to their communities. Having an out-of-province example will give us a closer look at what other smaller centres outside of BC are doing and enable us to potentially expand our learnings. \n\n\n  \n\n\nFollowing the presentations\, service providers will have a chance to engage in dialog through a question-and-answer period. \nREGISTER HERE: https://amssa-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_eekFuDnMQN6vxaNAUpCpIg

SUMMARY:AMSSATalk: INDIGENOUS LEADERS’ CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:In this AMSSATalk\, Indigenous Leaders will engage in a dialogue about truth\, reconciliation\, and decolonization. The purpose is for Settlement Providers to learn from the stewards of this land; to share\, listen\, and build relations by respectfully participating in a discussion and asking questions. \nFrom June to August 2021\, AMSSA facilitated a series of Indigenous Dialogue Circles\, to connect BCSIS settlement service providers with the understanding that we are supporting settlement on unceded and occupied territories. Led by Norm Leech\, Executive Director of the Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre\, the Circles were an opportunity for participants to learn about how they could relate to Indigenous people and how they could center Indigenous presence in their work and in their connection with newcomers. \nThroughout the conversations\, four key themes emerged: Indigenous Worldview versus Colonized Worldview\, the concept that We All Have Our Own Indigeneity\, Intergenerational Trauma and the Inherited Survivor Spirit\, and Decolonization. \nThe Indigenous Leaders’ Circle will continue the conversation and be an opportunity for further exploration of these themes. Katie Crocker\, AMSSA’s CEO\, will facilitate a free-flowing discussion with four Indigenous Leaders\, Norm Leech\, Tabatha Frank\, Lorelei Williams\, and JB the First Lady. Viewers will then be invited to connect with participants in a Q&A session. \nCLICK HERE TO JOIN THE MEETING: https://amssa-org.zoom.us/j/83444148592?pwd=NWUvVm44TXhsb3NHbEYyY0lRTVJiZz09#success \nLocation: Zoom\nMeeting ID: 834 4414 8592\nPasscode: 381669

SUMMARY:Advancing Climate Justice: Harnessing African Women’s Leadership
DESCRIPTION:The month of March is Women’s History Month\, a unique period that marks women’s historical and contemporary achievements across the world. In line with this significant moment and the impetus for gender equality\, the African Women’s Leadership Series celebrates African women’s outstanding contributions and examines the prevailing challenges that still require intensified investments for change to empower women. \nFor our third instalment in the series\, we are celebrating African women leading on climate justice. As the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report recently published in February 2022 shows\, women are disproportionately impacted by climate change particularly in Africa\, but our guests are climate champions that have overcome the barriers. They are Prof. Okorodudu-Fubara\, one of the founding mothers of environmental justice research and education who laid the foundation for climate justice work in Africa\, and Ms. Joyce Msuya\, a United Nations leader who has worked hard to advance climate justice in global policy and Africa. Our honorees will share their journeys\, challenges\, and advice to emerging young female climate leaders. There will also be an opportunity to ask them questions. \nWelcome remarks will be given by Nellie Kamau\, a student in the Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs program at the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. \nOur moderator is Ms. Elsabé Boshoff. She is an emerging female African leader in environmental justice whose work has supported the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. \nCo-hosts: This event is brought to you on behalf of the Liu Institute Network for Africa (LINA)\, and the Collective for Gender+ in Research\, hosted at the University of British Columbia’s Office for Regional and International Community Engagement (ORICE)\, all within the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA). \n  \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE: https://sppga.ubc.ca/events/event/advancing-climate-justice-harnessing-african-womens-leadership/

SUMMARY:ANTI-VIOLENCE: INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
DESCRIPTION:In this Virtual Information Session\, representatives from Family Services of Greater Vancouver\, BC Society of Transition Houses\, and the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre will discuss Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). \nThe World Health Organization recognizes IPV and GBV as major global public health concerns\, as they affect millions of people and can result in immediate and long-lasting health\, social and economic consequences. Additionally\, there are serious repercussions on children who are exposed to IPV. \nIn April 2020\, António Guterres\, the Secretary-General of the United Nations\, called on governments to ensure that the prevention of violence against women is a key part of their response plans for COVID-19. He implored governments to address the ‘horrifying global surge in IPV’. Reflecting global trends\, the Vancouver-based agency\, Battered Women’s Support Services\, noted that calls to their helpline increased by 400% during the pandemic. People who experience marginalization have been disproportionately impacted. \nIn this session\, Settlement Workers will learn how to identify abuse and effectively support impacted clients\, especially those with language or cultural barriers. Presenters will provide contextual information and discuss the impact of the pandemic\, as well practical strategies that frontline workers can implement and supports that they can access.  \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER: https://amssa-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMvcuGupzMqEtGYiGynBVRRZJTs-8jISDZz
