SUMMARY:BCSIS Virtual Information Session: B.C. Labour Market
DESCRIPTION:In this Virtual Information Session\, representatives from the Ministry of Post- Secondary Education and Future Skills will provide an overview of recent labour market trends\, considering today’s “tight labour market” and the current state of employment and unemployment in B.C. Recent immigration data will be discussed\, and a review of the B.C. Labour Market Outlook will highlight future labour market needs and B.C.’s High Opportunity Occupations. \nThe B.C. Labour Market Outlook provides a 10-year forecast of the flow of supply and demand for labour in the province. The new Outlook report was released early in February 2023. The forecast gives British Columbians the most up-to-date information they need to make informed decisions on careers\, skills training\, education and hiring\, and it’s a valuable tool for SPOs. \nIt is important for settlement workers to be familiar with the Outlook\, to provide their clients with comprehensive employment support and current labour market information. It specifically includes insights related to immigrants and acknowledges that immigration impacts both the supply and demand side of the labour market. Over one million job openings are expected between 2022 and 2032. In that time\, more than 636\,000 workers are expected to leave the workforce. As only 474\,000 young people will enter the workforce to replace them\, newcomers are expected to fill the majority of the remaining job openings. Projections show that 39\,000 new immigrants will join B.C.’s labour force each year on average over the next decade. This includes both permanent and temporary immigrants. \nIt is vital for settlement workers to be able to help their clients plan ahead\, in order to ensure that the next decade is filled with opportunity and prosperity. \n\n\n\n\nKey Event Details and Registration \nDate: Tuesday\, April 4\, 2023\nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. PST\nLocation: Zoom Webinar – Event details will be emailed immediately after registration \n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n \nSPEAKERS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJackie Storen\, Director\, Forecasting\, Labour Market Information Office\, Workforce Development and Skills Training Division\, Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills \nJackie and her team focus on developing future-oriented insights on labour demand and supply for industries and occupations for the production of the annual B.C. Labour Market Outlook and to support economic priorities of government. She joined the Forecasting unit in January 2022 and prior to this role\, she was the Director of Economic\, Business and Trade Statistics following several years as Director of Population and Demographic Analysis\, both of which were at BC Stats. \nMatt Ayres\, Chief Labour Market Economist\, Ministry of Post-Secondary Education\nand Future Skills \nDr. Matt Ayres is the Chief Labour Market Economist with the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. Matt heads up the Labour Market Information Office\, that consists of two teams. One team is dedicated to forecasting labour market trends (including work on the BC Labour Market Outlook) and produces a 10-year labour market outlook for B.C. The other group focuses on current labour market information and immigration analysis. \n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions?\nSend an email to Rebecca Ferguson at rferguson@amssa.org

SUMMARY:AMSSATalk Virtual Event Supporting Newcomer Women Through the Shifting World Post COVID-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:(Le français suit…) \n \nAs the global resistance for women’s rights continues to unfold\, it is time to reflect on how the increase of equal rights demands parallel to the intensified gender-based inequalities that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light and how they disproportionally impact newcomer women and their journey to settlement.\n \nJoin us for the AMSSATalk Supporting newcomer women through the shifting world post COVID-19 Pandemic to hear from a panel of expert speakers who reflect on how the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the gender inequalities and their adverse impact on newcomer women\, specifically those who settled in Canada within the past five years. The theme of the AMSSATalk will be to capture women’s resistance in various forms as response to the changes and inequalities manifested by the COVID-19 pandemic. \n \nUtilizing an intersectional lens\, this AMSSATalk will feature women who play various roles within the settlement sector and provide a platform for them to share their experiences\, perspectives\, and insight on how they have been supporting newcomer women during the transitionary since the COVID-19 Pandemic.\n \n\nAMSSATalk: Supporting Newcomer Women Through the Shifting World Post COVID-19 Pandemic\nDate: Monday\, March 6\, 2023\nTime: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. PST\nLocation: Zoom Webinar – Event details will be emailed immediately after registration\n \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n\n\n \nMariam Bouchoutrouch\, PIRS\nMariam has more than 35 years of experience in the community social service sector\, 15 years in leadership roles. Mariam’s passion for the non-profit sector started in university where she was a founding coordinator of the McGill Walk Safe Network (which spread to universities across Canada as Safe Walk). She also founded two programs for families with young children in Vancouver. \nMariam’s goal is to build a deliberately developmental organization that encourages the potential of immigrant women to grow into their leadership potential. \n \n\nKhatira Daryabi\nKhatira Daryabi is an Afghan social activist who is currently studying a dual degree in Psychology\, International Relations and Business Management at the University of British Columbia\, Canada. Her activism for peace and gender equality led her to independently establish biking protests in Kabul\, Afghanistan. She was a finalist for the 2020 International Children’s Peace Prize\, awarded the 2022 Vancouver Award of Excellence\, and nominated for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award for 2022-2023.\n \n\nZahra Esmail\, Vantage Point\nZahra is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Vantage Point\, which provides training and capacity building support to non-profit organizations across BC. Zahra sits on the board of Lookout Foundation\, Cuso International and Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society\, and is a member of the Honorary Governor’s Council of Vancouver Foundation. She strongly advocates that any organization can be truly equitable only if all its employees take on an individual as well as a collective responsibility towards systemic change. \nHer lived experiences coming from India where there is race\, class\, gender\, age\, religion\, education\, and all kinds of inequities that one can think of to Canada that at least outwardly celebrates diversity and inclusion have sparked an interest in her to delve deeper into the realities of one’s identity and how it can be both empowering and oppressing. \nSandhya holds an MA in Adult Education (University of British Columbia\, 2007) and an MA in English (India\, 2000). She is a certified Intercultural Practitioner (Norquest College\, 2018). \n\n\n\n
