SUMMARY:Becoming a White Antiracist: Virtual Talk with Dr. Ismaël Traoré
DESCRIPTION:Developing an antiracism perspective and practice is not an ordinary or definite outcome of living in a multicultural and multiracial society. It is an intentional and proactive process\, which develops in fits and starts\, and requires steadfast commitment. In this virtual talk\, Dr. Traoré will discuss the common stages involved in developing a white identity\, and the process\, challenges\, and breakthroughs in learning to be a white antiracist.\nThe focus of this event is not on racialized people’s experience with racism\, but on ‘whiteness’. While some participants may find this approach unlike conventional views and even challenging\, attendees are asked to keep an open mind and help create an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity\, exploration\, mutual respect\, and self-reflection. \nThis event is suitable for people who already accept the following truths:\na) racism exits\nb) it manifests in different ways\nc) its existence is independent of hate\nd) we live in a racialized society\, and\ne) we all are shaped and impacted by it in different ways \nDate: Monday July 6\, 2020\nTime: 10:00 am to 12:30 pm (PST)\nLocation: Online | You will receive the web link in an email from AMSSA Events after registering. \nPlease Register HERE. \nThe deadline for registration for this event is Friday July 3rd\, 2020

SUMMARY:AMSSA Lecture: Digital Access & Digital Literacy
DESCRIPTION:COVID19 has revealed deep inequalities in access to technologies among Canadians. 34% of Canadians earning under $30\,000 a year do not have a home Internet connection\, and many others rely upon public wifi and cell phones to access essential services and information. This situation opened up significant challenges for language and settlement organizations to maintain contact with their constituents\, ensure their well being and safety\, and to re-start language and other services online. Dr. Suzanne Smythe and Dr. Amea Wilbur interviewed over 25 language and settlement workers during the important time. \n \nIn this interactive session blending dialogue and questions with participants\, Dr. Smythe and Dr. Wilbur will present key themes from these conversations and insights from related research among newcomer communities during COVID times: \n\n\nWhat improvisations and innovations did settlement and outreach workers adopt to reach out to newcomer communities? \nWhat have been the successes and surprises bringing learning and services online? \nWhat new pedagogical and social inclusion challenges persist? \nWho continues to be excluded from these learning opportunities and what are the implications of this for equity and justice among low income and racialized communities? \n\nEvent Details:\nDate: Monday\, October 5\, 2020\nTime: 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (Pacific Time)\nLocation: Zoom | more details will be sent after registration\nRegistration deadline: October 2\, 2020\n\n \nRegister by clicking here.\nSpeakers\nDr. Suzanne Smythe (she\, her) is Associate Professor in Adult Literacies and Adult Education at Simon Fraser University. Her current research program examines how digital access and new technologies are changing pedagogies and theories-as-usual in community language and literacy settings. \nDr. Amea Wilbur (she\, her) Assistant Professor in the Department of Adult Education\, University of the Fraser Valley\, Co-researcher\, COVID and Adult Education project.\nDr. Wilbur has worked in the settlement sector for many years in Vancouver and has facilitated numerous workshops on trauma-informed practices for settlement and language providers both provincially and nationally.

SUMMARY:Good Pitch Vancouver Virtual: THE WORLD IS BRIGHT
DESCRIPTION:GPVV The World is Bright – Wed Oct 7th 10AM PT \nThe World is Bright is about two parents and their personal journey to understand their son’s mental illness and suicide\, revealing the unique effects of mental illness on immigrants. Their negotiations with their relationship\, different cultures\, grief\, and family penetrate to the heart of the immigrant experience\, and break the stigma of speaking about mental illness. \nThis campaign is partnering with immigrant and refugee settlement agencies like MOSAIC\, and mental health resources centres in the Canadian Mental Health Association\, to reach out to immigrants and provide a safe space to discuss and unpack mental wellbeing. The campaign will also encourage culturally competent mental health resources\, so that language and culture can be removed as a barrier to seeking help. \nYour organization is invited to a 2-hour virtual event to learn how this film can support your existing work. Meet other organizations who have similar goals\, and begin a conversation on how the issue can be uplifted- together. \nPlease fill out the registration form at www.storymoneyimpact.com/gpvv-form.
