SUMMARY:Building Unity During the Pandemic: Addressing Xenophobic Attitudes and Behaviours
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by: SIETAR BC  in partnership with BCCIE \nSponsored by:  Vancouver Island University     \nPlatform: GoToWebinar\nCost: Free\n \nThis webinar will provide a venue to discuss strategies for dealing with xenophobic attitudes and behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic\, particularly towards ethnic cohorts present throughout Canadian society\, including international students\, immigrants\, or visitors to Canada. This webinar will offer strategies to those who are targeted\, bystanders\, and those who support and work with them including instructors\, student support teams\, community and integration support workers\, health care professionals and friends and family. \nObjective of this webinar\nTo open up a discussion about how we can build unity through effectively addressing racist attitudes and behaviour as well as how we can best support those targeted. Participants will learn strategies to effectively respond to xenophobic situations from the perspective of the person who is targeted\, as a bystander\, or as an educator. Participants will receive a downloadable worksheet to support their learning.\n \nBackground\nA recent survey conducted by the Canadian Bureau for International Education reports “increased racial prejudices on campus [and] in local communities” following the onset of COVID-19. The pandemic also tends to have a disproportionate impact on the most marginalized people in our communities\, not only from a health perspective\, but from one of societal perception. Not only has it led to illness and mortality\, it has had a significant impact on the health\, well-being\, and sense of belonging for the multitudes directly and indirectly affected.\n \nPresenters\nJessie Sutherland  \nJessie Sutherland\, M.A in Dispute Resolution\, is an International Speaker and Trainer\, Director of Intercultural Strategies\, and founder and innovator of the award-winning “Belonging Matters” dialogue and capacity building program. Jessie is also the author of the best-selling bookWorldview Skills: Transforming Conflict from the Inside Out. Intercultural Strategies offers speaking\, training and strategic consulting packages for organizations working with diverse communities on engaging diversity\, building a culture of belonging\, and fostering intercultural collaboration. Jessie is currently working as the lead consultant on a number of projects. \nQueenie Choo\nBeing a strong advocate for others is a thread that has continued throughout Queenie Choo’s career. She is the CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.\, now the largest non-profit social service organization in Canada\, which provides settlement services to new immigrants through 30 locations in BC\, and pre-arrival services overseas. Her career in advocacy has seen her appointed to many advisory committees\, including the Premier’s Chinese-Canadian Community Advisory Committee\, the provincial Minister’s Advisory Forum on Poverty Reduction\, OmniTV Community Advisory Board\, Diversity Council to the Joint Task Force Pacific (National Defence Public Affairs)\, and most recently the Premier’s Economic Recovery Task Force.  \n  \nRegister by 4:00 PM April 27\, 2020. SUMMARY:BC’s New Lobbying Law: Are You Compliance Ready? | An AMSSA Members Only Webinar
DESCRIPTION:British Columbia’s new lobbying law came into force on May 4\, 2020. The law establishes new reporting requirements\, new filing deadlines\, and new ethical rules.\nOne of the most significant changes is the elimination of the 100-hour lobbying threshold. In the past\, this threshold allowed many not-for-profit organizations to lobby without being registered. Moving forward\, almost all not-for-profit organizations will be required to register with the Office of the Registrar of Lobbyists for BC. \n“Lobbying” is defined broadly in British Columbia. It includes attempting to influence government decisions\, such as legislative proposals\, bills\, resolutions\, regulations\, programs\, policies\, directives and guidelines. It also includes seeking government contracts\, grants and financial benefits. \nExclusive to AMSSA members\, this webinar will offer sector-specific information and Q&A. \nAbout the Speaker: \nKyle Morrow is a lawyer with Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. He advises clients on their compliance obligations at the municipal\, provincial and federal levels of government in the areas of lobbying\, conflicts of interest\, campaign finance\, anti-bribery and corruption\, whistleblowing\, and procurement integrity. \nRegistration Details:\nDate: Thursday\, May 28\, 2020\nTime: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM PT\nFor AMSSA Members only \nPlease register by Wednesday\, May 27 at 4:00 PM PT

SUMMARY:Becoming a White Antiracist: Virtual Talk with Dr. Ismaël Traoré
DESCRIPTION:Developing an antiracism perspective and practice is not an ordinary or definite outcome of living in a multicultural and multiracial society. It is an intentional and proactive process\, which develops in fits and starts\, and requires steadfast commitment. In this virtual talk\, Dr. Traoré will discuss the common stages involved in developing a white identity\, and the process\, challenges\, and breakthroughs in learning to be a white antiracist.\nThe focus of this event is not on racialized people’s experience with racism\, but on ‘whiteness’. While some participants may find this approach unlike conventional views and even challenging\, attendees are asked to keep an open mind and help create an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity\, exploration\, mutual respect\, and self-reflection. \nThis event is suitable for people who already accept the following truths:\na) racism exits\nb) it manifests in different ways\nc) its existence is independent of hate\nd) we live in a racialized society\, and\ne) we all are shaped and impacted by it in different ways \nDate: Monday July 6\, 2020\nTime: 10:00 am to 12:30 pm (PST)\nLocation: Online | You will receive the web link in an email from AMSSA Events after registering. \nPlease Register HERE. \nThe deadline for registration for this event is Friday July 3rd\, 2020
