SUMMARY:Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness for EAL Learners Resource
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite language instructors across the settlement sector\, including those teaching LINC\, ESL/EAL\, and other specialized language classes\, to the virtual launch of a newly developed Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness for EAL Learners Resource. Newcomers\, immigrants\, and refugees with limited English proficiency often face significant barriers to accessing information and services related to GBV.  \nLanguage instructors play a critical role in introducing essential life information\, including safety and rights\, to newcomers in accessible and meaningful ways. While the session is especially relevant for language instructors\, all settlement practitioners and service providers are welcome to attend. \nEvent Details \nDate: Tuesday\, February 24\, 2026\nTime: 2:00 – 4:00 PM AST\nRegister here – https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/gender-based-violence-gbv-awareness-for-eal-learners-tickets-1980744863206?aff=oddtdtcreator\nLocation: ZOOM (link will be shared with registered participants)

SUMMARY:Organizational Capacity Roundtable - Succession Planning for Business Continuity
DESCRIPTION:Settlement service provider organizations continue to face challenges in the critical area of human resources capacity building. Current economic conditions such as affordability and high cost of living have exacerbated struggles related to capacity in HR\, such as stretched resources and recruitment difficulties to name a few. Settlement service providers also face the same challenges as Canada of an aging workforce. Even while baby boomers are remaining in the workforce longer\, projections show that there may be 50% more people retiring in 2025 than the average of the last 10 years. \nWhether it be for extended leaves such as parental or medical\, an unexpected departure or a planned one\, losing key staff can create several challenges for settlement service organizations. This includes leadership gaps\, loss of expertise and knowledge of the organization and uncertainty for staff and potential of low morale just to name a few challenges\, all of which affect the quality and amount of service offered. \nThis workshop will provide an understanding of the steps and considerations to succession planning\, the roles that each staff member may play in this and tips for developing a concrete succession plan. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own organization’s needs and share strategies for implementing a plan. \nThis session is targeted to staff in management positions\, HR staff and Board members. \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nDate: Friday\, June 20\, 2025 \nTime: 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PST \nLocation: Zoom - Event details will be emailed immediately after registration  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nPRESENTER \nKim Vincent-Lambert\, Engaged  \nKim Vincent-Lambert is a Senior People and Culture Partner at Engaged with over 20 years of HR experience and leadership across various industries and company sizes. \nKim has a Certified Human Resource Professional (CPHR) designation and extensive certifications in Human Resource Management\, Business Management\, Project Management\, Women’s Leadership\, and Learning & Development. SUMMARY:Webinar: BC Legal Aid
DESCRIPTION:Settlement service providers are often the first and main source that newcomers go to for support\, providing effective\, culturally sensitive and appropriate services and creating service linkages within their large networks to support newcomers in their myriad needs.  However\, newcomers may face challenges that require legal advice beyond the scope and ability of service providers such as child protection matters\, serious family problems and immigration and refugee issues.  As service providers meet clients with increasing complex situations\, it is important that they understand how legal aid in BC works\, when their clients need legal aid and how they can support client access to legal services.    \nThis webinar will provide service providers in all regions of the province with an understanding of the most common challenges newcomers face that may require legal aid and how service providers can support newcomers with these challenges in conjunction with the legal aid process. This session will also cover the types of legal aid offered through Legal Aid BC and the process of linking clients with Legal Aid BC.  \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nDate: Wednesday\, June 18\, 2025    \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. PST   \nLocation: Zoom Webinar - Event details will be emailed immediately after registration    \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nPRESENTERS \nEduardo Aragón\nSupervisor\, Legal Aid Navigators\nPublic Legal Education and Information\nLegal Aid BC \nOriginally from El Salvador\, Eduardo came to Canada as a refugee with his family. Before LABC\, Eduardo ran a small-non-profit agency helping Latin American refugee claimants.  Currently\, Eduardo is supervising the Legal Aid Navigators\, who are tasked with guiding clients through the legal aid process and connects them with services and supports. \nBaljinder Gill\nCommunity Engagement Coordinator\nPublic Legal Education and Information\nLegal Aid BC \nBaljinder started her career with Legal Aid in 2006 as a Legal Information Outreach worker and worked closely with clients and organizations building relationships and collaborations. SUMMARY:Virtual Information Session: Fraud Awareness and Prevention for Settlement Service Provider Organizations
DESCRIPTION:According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE)\, the world’s largest anti-fraud organization\, one in ten reported fraud cases between 2016 and 2024 occurred at non-profit organizations (NPOs)\, resulting in median losses of $86\,000 to $143\,000 CAD per incident. Over 80% of NPOs that experienced fraud between 2021 and 2024 took steps to modify their anti-fraud controls afterward\, understanding the importance of awareness and prevention measures. \nSettlement Service Provider Organizations (SPOs)\, like other NPOs\, are focused on fulfilling their missions. Operating on tight budgets and often facing frequent staff turnover\, SPOs may struggle to establish clear roles and robust internal controls. These characteristics can leave them particularly vulnerable to both internal and external fraud. \nThis session is targeted to senior organizational leaders\, managers and finance professionals at SPOs and will provide practical insights into controls\, assessments\, systems\, and strategies that organizations and staff can implement to mitigate fraud risks and will provide actionable tools to enhance fraud prevention and detection within their organizations. \nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the presenter. \nEVENT DETAILS AND REGISTRATION  \nDate: Monday\, March 24\, 2025     \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30a.m. PST    \nLocation: Zoom Webinar - Event details will be emailed immediately after registration \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE \nPRESENTER \nSusan R. SUMMARY:Organizational Approaches to Anti-Racism: From Self to Systems Change
DESCRIPTION:ANTI-RACISM WEBINAR: REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION \nAs a sector that serves many vulnerable and racialized populations and is also mainly comprised of racialized frontline workers\, anti-racism is an intrinsic part of the settlement sector. Yet often we are challenged by a lack of resources and time\, the systemic and entrenched nature of racism\, and limited guidance around evidence-based practices that translate good intentions into meaningful systemic change. Although there are a range of anti-racist actions that are often looked to as tools to start this work—policies\, trainings\, employee resource groups\, hiring practices\, audits\, etc.—it can be difficult to discern what approaches will translate into material changes rather than act as surface-level distractions from the root issues.   \nThis two-part webinar will focus on providing organizations with tools and resources that they can apply to their anti-racism work\, with an opportunity to discuss how to implement impactful initiatives\, develop more meaningful and systematic evaluation\, and create long-term plans that meet the unique needs of the settlement sector. \nPart 2 will continue the discussion of organizational approaches to anti-racism\, expanding on how to develop equity as a technical skill to implement anti-racist practices throughout an organization. The aim is for attendees to walk away from the webinar with an understanding of how they can move forward with anti-racism work within their specific context and constraints.   \nAttendees will receive take home materials to help them take anti-racist action within their organizations.   \nDate: March 5\, 2025  \nTime: 1:00 – 3:00pm PT  \nLocation: Zoom \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nSPEAKER \nSharon Nyangweso is the Founder and CEO of QuakeLab\, she specializes in a radical new approach to problem solving with an equity lens that is measurable\, strategic\, and based on a strong foundation of design thinking. An immigrant from Kenya\, she has worked across sectors with organizations in 11 countries. Sharon is a TEDx Speaker\, a Globe & Mail Report on Business Magazine 2022 Changemakers Recipient\, 2022 Black Entrepreneur nominee and Ottawa Consulting Agency of the Year 2023. \nQUESTIONS? \nSend an email to enguyen@amssa.org
