Safe Harbour: Respect for All is about a vision in action: creating opportunities for storefront businesses, institutions, agencies, and entire municipalities to celebrate our differences, helping to create safer, more welcoming communities that support diversity and reject discrimination. Respect for All – Pass It On! In Manitoba, Safe Harbour is expanding in Winnipeg, Steinbach, Russell, and Roblin-Cartwright.
Safe Harbour-certified locations are equipped with the knowledge to better understand their diverse workforce and improve their service to diverse customers and clients. They are leaders in their commitment to providing an inclusive workplace environment and promoting diversity in their communities by following these three simple principles:
*A Safe Harbour helping hand may include offering a place to sit, a glass of water, a phone to use, and information to help them seek further assistance. It is recommended that you have a plan for employees to respond to people who need a helping hand. For further support, please visit www.safeharbour.ca and see the “First Steps” outlined in the Safe Harbour Participant’s Workbook. Each Safe Harbour displays the colourful window decal, a certificate, and other signage that proudly announces to their community that their management and staff welcome and support newcomers, visible minorities, people with disabilities, youth, seniors, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirited, Queer community, and other diverse community members. Safe Harbour-certified locations are encouraged to model diversity by promoting the three Safe Harbour principles to their customers/clients, community members, and neighbouring storefronts. By discussing these principles openly, managers and staff in Safe Harbour-certified locations know what immediate steps to take to offer safe refuge to someone facing discrimination as well as to respond to discriminatory remarks and actions within the workplace if they occur. Safe Harbours are setting the tone for their community – why not participate as well? Join the growing movement across Canada! Simply find your local Community Organizer in our directory and give them a call. We look forward to hearing from you!
