Safe Harbour – Newfoundland
Safe Harbour: Respect for All is about a vision in action: creating opportunities for businesses, institutions, agencies, and municipalities to celebrate our differences, helping to create safer, more welcoming communities that support diversity and reject discrimination.
Safe Harbour Commitments
- Equitable Treatment for All: welcoming all clients and/or customers in a respectful manner. If a concern is expressed regarding a lack of respectful treatment, employers and staff take steps to address it.
- An Immediate Safe Place: providing an immediate safe place for someone experiencing discrimination in or near the worksite which may include a place to sit, a glass of water, a phone to use, and access to a list of resources.
- Prepared Employees and Worksites: preparing all staff to implement these commitments.
Certified Safe Harbour Locations
Each Safe Harbour-certified Location displays the window decal, a certificate, and other signage that proudly announces to their community that their management and staff welcome and support newcomers, visible minorities, people with disabilities, youth, seniors, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and two-spirited community, and other diverse groups.
Staff at Safe Harbour-certified Locations are prepared to offer immediate and temporary safe refuge for anyone facing mistreatment or discrimination.

**Important Update about Safe Harbour Program Funding**
The national Safe Harbour: Respect for All program was funded through Citizenship and Immigration Canada from September 2008 to March 2010. AMSSA worked with the Association for New Canadians and other agencies to expand the program in Newfoundland. As national funding has ended, several Community Organizers have remained available to deliver the workshop. AMSSA has outlined the following options for Community Organizers:
1) Depending on capacity and availability, a Community Organizer may request a facilitator’s fee ($250.00/ two-hour workshop) and travel expenses to be covered to deliver the workshop in-house;
2) If there is more interest from other organizations, a large community-based workshop for multiple participants could be delivered. Each Community Organizer can choose to request a facilitator fee for this type of workshop as well.
