The Steering Committee for the Promoting Healthy Living in BC's Multicultural Communities Project reports to AMSSA's Multicultural Health Committee. The MHC was established in 1985 to encourage communication and cooperation on multicultural health issues between government, health care providers and the community, and to promote the incorporation and implementation of multicultural policy in health care organizations. Its objective is to advocate culturally sensitive, equitable and appropriate health care for all British Columbians. The Committee also provides a forum for minority cultural communities to identify and address their health issues. MHC Members consist of health care practitioners, academics/researchers, settlement workers and community activists.
The Steering Committee supports the project's goals and objectives and the project coordinator. It is responsible for developing the work plan in collaboration with the Project Coordinator, advising on methodology, tools and criteria, reviewing reports, analysis and report findings, assisting in the evaluation process and the development of a dissemination plan and in the development of a strategic plan to promote the implementation of the project's recommendations.
The committee is made up of key stakeholders with a vested interest in ensuring that access to quality health care and interpreter services are available to all British Columbian communities. Representatives from the regional and provincial health authorities, the Provincial Language Service, AMSSA and its member agencies, community health agencies and the BC Ministry of Health sit on the committee.
