There is increasing concern that the health care system is less responsive to the health and health care needs of our increasingly diverse patient population and that immigrants and ethnocultural communities have different experiences in the health services system than other Canadians, even when they have similar medical problems.

The panel presentations looked at relevant issues, challenges, and ways to address the access challenge in order to offer a future vision for culturally competent health care. The presentation topics were chosen for their content and focus and the presenters for their expertise on those topics.

Chris Friesen Dr.Soma Gansan, MD, FRCPC

Chris Friesen, the Director of Settlement Services at the Immigrant Services Society of BC (ISS) for 12 years, has an extensive record of achievement in the areas of refugee and settlement, human rights, community development and multiculturalism. He speaks about the immigrant experience in accessing healthcare.

Dr. Soma Ganesan, a psychiatrist who came from Vietnam , is a Clinical Professor at UBC Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Cross-Cultural Program UBC/VGH. He speaks of his many experiences in practice, and in the field.

Dr. Arminee Kazanjian Sarah Bowen, Ph.D.
Dr. Arminee Kazanjian, an internationally recognized Health Services Researcher who is a professor in the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC gives an overview of a national project on immigrant health and health care utilization in Canada: "Rethinking Disparities in Health Services Utilization by Immigrants". Dr. Sarah Bowen, Research Coordinator Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences , University of Manitoba speaks on the issue of addressing language barriers.
