Feeling good is important for your health. Moving to a new country can be very hard because you have to leave your family, friends, and community behind. Everything is new, from the culture to the language to the people. It is very normal to feel lonely, sad, or nervous. In British Columbia, there are many people who can help you, even in your own language. Click on the links below to find information about things you can do to feel better or ways you can get the help that you need.

WebsiteAbuse of Older Persons – This website has information to help older adults who are being abused. It includes recognizing different forms of abuse, how to respond to the abused, safety for older adults, resources, and prevention tips.

BookMultilingualBC Mental Health Guide – This booklet has information on mental health support and services. While the information is for people living in Vancouver, Richmond, and the North Shore, it can still be useful for everybody. There is one section with “multicultural” information, where you can learn about finding translated materials and people who can help you in different languages.

WebsiteCanadian Mental Health Association – This website has a lot of information about mental health for people living in British Columbia. There are factsheets, quizzes, magazines, and more. If you would like to speak to someone, you can call their information line 24 hours a day and speak to a trained volunteer.

WebsiteChild and Youth Mental Health Services – This information sheet was created by the Government of British Columbia. It has information for children and youth on where they can go to get help, as well as a list of resources and support available in British Columbia.

WebsiteCommunity Support for Mental Health – This website has information on mental health topics, including tools you can use to become healthier, information on different support groups, and a discussion forum where you can communicate with other people. You can also ask experts questions about any health-related topic.

DirectoryMultilingualCounsellingBC – This website has an online directory of counselling professionals, where you can get a list of counsellors by location, area of practice, language, or name. There is also a list of appropriate questions to ask your counsellor when you meet him/her.

BookDealing with Depression – Antidepressant Skills for Teens – This booklet was made to help teens deal with depression. There is information on what depression is and how to deal with it, as well as worksheets to help teens deal with depression on their own.

WebsiteDual Diagnosis - A Guide for Families – This guide has information for families with children with mental disorders. There are stories written by parents and children, a dictionary with mental health terms, information on how you can help someone with a mental illness or how other people can help you, a list of resources, and important contact information.

WebsiteMultilingualEasy to Read Health Topics – This website has a list of information sheets on many different health topics. There is a section on mental health topics, and some of the resources are available in Spanish.
