PRE EVENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES :

Set-Up Crew :
Friday, February 20, 2009, 8:30am-12:30 pm
Help is needed to move items from our head office to the event venue on Friday, February 20th (the day before the fair) starting at 8:30 am.  The Set-Up Crew will also help hang banners and signs and set up tables.  Volunteers should be able to lift up to 15kg/30lbs and be comfortable using stairs and ladders.  If you’re available and looking to fit a little healthy exercise in with your volunteering, this is the position for you!

Administrative/Office Help:
Friday, February 20, 2009, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Other Dates To Be Determined

In the days leading up to the event, we need some help putting together materials for the Diversity Health Fair.  Come join our work parties! We’re looking for folks to help us stuff a large mailing to go out in the last week of January – date to be determined.  We also need help putting together materials for the Health Fair – assembling name tags, stuffing goody bags for visitors, and other fun tasks.  We’ll be meeting up on Friday, February 20th (the day before the fair) at 11:00am.  If you are available and enjoy working with small groups of people, consider this position.

Kids’ Activity Area Assistants
Saturday, February 21, 2009 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Our Kids’ Activity Area has been designed by LEAP BC (Literacy, Education, Activity and Play – a 2010 Legacies Project).  Volunteers will assist LEAP staff in encouraging child and parent involvement in fun and educational activities, such as story time, Wriggly Ribbons and other great games.  This is a great position for volunteers who love working with children or those who have an interest in Early Childhood Education.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.  

Reserve Team
Saturday, February 21, 2009 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Do you like a little variety in your day? Consider joining our Reserve Team.  These volunteers will be slotted where needed throughout the day and will fill in for others to take breaks (which means you might just be one of the most popular volunteers at the fair!)  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean. 

Legacy Activity Team
Saturday, February 21, 2009 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Volunteers supervise the Legacy Artwork wall and encourage visitors to contribute comments or small drawings to the interactive artwork.  Contributions to the piece in any language are welcome.  If you are friendly, outgoing, and would like to spend your day empowering people to express themselves with pens and markers, this is the job for you!  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.  

Survey Assistants
Saturday, February 21, 2009 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
The survey team approaches visitors to the fair throughout the day and asks them to answer a short survey to collect their opinions on the Fair.  The data is used to make the Diversity Health Fair even better for the future. Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.  In addition to the general volunteer orientation, Survey volunteers will also need to attend specialized training – date to be determined.  If you are friendly, outgoing and believe that everyone has the right to express their opinion, this is a fun way to spend the day.

Tear Down Crew
Saturday, February 21, 2009 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Information/Welcome Team
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

This team of volunteers will be stationed at tables near the fair entrance to welcome our visitors with gift bags, and answer any questions they may have about the activities of the fair and layout of the venue.  They will also check with visitors to see if they need language assistance and pair them with Language Assistant volunteers as required.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.  If you are friendly, outgoing and enjoy helping people, please join our Information/Welcome Team.

Language Assistants
Saturday February 21, 2009, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Are you fluent in English and one or more other languages? Would you enjoy using those language skills to help translate or interpret for others?  If so, please consider becoming one of the Diversity Health Fair’s Language Assistants.  Our visitors to the fair come from many different cultural backgrounds and some may need linguistic assistance to access the Diversity Health Fair’s information and activities.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and fluency in one or more other languages.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean. 

Fair Hosts
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Our mobile information squad! This team will patrol the venue ready to field questions from visitors on the event schedule and where to find things.  They will approach visitors who appear to be lost or require assistance and offer to help them.  Hosts may also provide information or assistance to exhibitors if required.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.   Volunteers should be friendly, outgoing, approachable and not afraid to talk to strangers.

Health Screening Assistants
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Committed to helping people get healthy?  Stationed in the Health Screening area of the Fair, these volunteers will greet visitors, help schedule health screenings and assist screening staff as required.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.   Knowledge of medical terminology and/or familiarity with health procedures such as blood sugar testing, vision tests, blood pressure, etc. is an asset. Preference will be given to volunteers with an academic or professional background in health care.

Cooking Demonstration Assistants
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

This team will assist chefs and performers with their equipment and stage set-up as needed, distribute any handouts or food samples to the crowd, and encourage visitor engagement and participation.  Following Vancouver Coastal Health regulations, volunteers will clean and sanitize cooking area between demonstrations.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean. 

Entertainment/Stage Assistants
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Like to be where the action is? Help out at our Coast Capital Savings Entertainment Stage.  The day’s program features exciting music and dance performances designed to get people up and moving.  This team will assist performers with their equipment and stage set-up as needed, distribute any handouts to the crowd, and encourage visitor engagement and participation.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean. 
 
Fitness Demonstration Assistants
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Exercise is a key component of healthy living and diabetes prevention.  Our fitness demonstrations show how people of all ages can work out and have fun while they get fit.  Volunteers will assist fitness demonstrators with equipment and set-up as required, distribute any handouts to the crowd, and encourage visitor engagement and participation.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.   

Security Team
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

This team helps manage crowd flow in the venue and ensures access to entrances, exits, and washroom facilities.  The Security Team also gently steers visitors away from non-public areas of the fair, such as the Volunteer Centre and the green room for special guests.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4) and should be able to speak another language.  We have a particular need for volunteers who can speak French, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean.  

Volunteer Centre Assistants
Saturday, February 21, 2009, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Do you like a little behind-the-scenes action?  Think about helping out at the Volunteer Centre.  These volunteers assist all of the fair volunteers with signing in and out of their shift, provide them with name tags and other resources, hand out bagged lunches, and assist the Volunteer Coordinator with troubleshooting over the course of the day.  Volunteers need advanced proficiency in English (ESL Level 4).  Knowledge of another language is an asset but not required.
