Promoting Healthy Living

We’d like to invite Lower Mainland ESL teachers and their students to attend and take part in this year’s exciting event. Teacher Resource Sheets can be downloaded from our website for you to encourage students to prepare for the fair, fully participate at the fair, and discuss and share their experience after the fair. The information will include a map and directions to the Health Fair, an activity sheet with health-related vocabulary, teacher resources, and a scavenger hunt that can only be completed by attending the event. Leading up to the Health Fair, you can spark discussions and games in your classroom and adapt these resources as necessary to suit your student needs, while teaching crucial health information.

Filled with fun and educational activities, the Health Fair is a free event that invites multicultural communities to learn about crucial health topics and encourages them to adapt healthier lifestyles. This one-stop shop for basic health information and major preventative health issues answers questions and connects the multicultural community to BC’s health resources. Incorporated in the day’s events will be interactive health tests and displays in the languages of new Canadians.

Health Fact

DID YOU KNOW…

  • Immigrants generally arrive in better health than the Canadian-born.
  • As time passes their health is like other Canadians. Some medical problems may arise as immigrants age, as well as when they are integrated and adopt behaviours that have negative health impacts.
  • Health problems may be because of the stress of immigration, which involves finding suitable employment and establishing a new social support network.
  • Deterioration in health was also related to socio-economic status, specifically, low education and low household income.
  • Recent non-European immigrants were much more likely than the Canadian-born population to have had a substantial weight gain since immigrating.
