Promoting Healthy Living

The best health care is possible when people have the practical information and tools to take action. Prevention is becoming an increasingly important part of our health care system and a major emphasis is a public commitment to healthy eating and fitness as well as learning ways to prevent illness and improve our lifestyles.
Health Fact 1

A combination of fun and educational activities, the Multicultural Health Fair is a free community event that will provide a simple way for multi-ethnic families to become aware of crucial health topics and encourage the community to adapt healthier lifestyles. A one-stop shop for basic health information and major preventative health issues, from obesity to diabetes, the Fair will also answer questions about healthy foods and connect the multicultural community to BC’s health resources. Incorporated in the day’s events will be interactive health screenings and displays, in the languages of new Canadians, for what are largely lifestyle-oriented diseases. Last year’s Fair was an overwhelming success. This year's fair will be the largest in Canada and unparalleled in the country.

Calculate your rate

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the minimum amount of energy (calories) your body needs at rest to perform basic functions, such as breathing. A variety of factors - such as your age, diet and exercise - influence your BMR. Because your body expends more calories a day than those required for basic bodily functions, your active metabolic rate (AMR) is the approximate number of calories you burn on a typical day.

To calculate your BMR and AMR:
Enter your height and weight in metric measurements (if you don't know the metric measurements, enter your height and weight in imperial measurements in our Imperial to metric calculator below, then click Calculate! This will automatically enter your weight and height into the BMR/AMR calculator in metric measurements). Also enter your age, sex and appropriate level of exercise, then click Calculate!

Please note that many factors affect the number of calories you burn in a day, so these figures are estimates.
